Queer TIFF Roundup

2013 may have been the queerest TIFF yet

Ryan Carter and Nicolas Kazamia discuss their favourite films and favourite moments of TIFF 2013.

Every year thousands of film fans descend on Toronto to attend the Toronto International Film Festival and this year was no exception.

The queer contingent of films, though, was so strong in 2013 that if one were to think this year’s TIFF was an LGBT film festival, they wouldn’t be far off the mark.

Films with queer content such asBlue is the Warmest Colour, Dallas Buyers Club, Kill Your Darlings, Eastern Boys, Stranger By the Lake and Tom at the Farm all screened to packed movie theatres and garnered critical kudos.

Movie stars such as Julie Roberts, Hugh Jackman and Daniel Radcliffe walked down the red carpet, as well as Orange is the New Black’s Taylor Schilling and Seinfield’s Julia Louis Dreyfuss.

Big films arrived with big buzz; some, like August: Osage County crashed and burned, while others, such as the Douglas Sirk inspired Kate Winslet vehicle, Labour Day, gathered steam.

From the head scratching Enemy to the heart breaking Bad Hair, this year’s TIFF will not easily be forgotten.
