Bruce LaBruce lands MoMA exhibit

Canadian director will have films showcased in New York

Bruce LaBruce, known for his films Gerontophilia, Hustler White and No Skin Off My Ass, is an underground wonder — but his films will be front and center at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) this April.

From April 23 to May 2, MoMA will be showing LaBruce’s work in a featured exhibit. Daily Xtra had the chance to sit down with exhibit curator Rajendra Roy, chief curator of film at MoMA.

LaBruce is famous for mixing dichotomies in his films. He embraces highbrow art while exploring subject matters that many filmmakers would blush at. His latest film, an adaptation of Arnold Schoenberg’s opera Pierrot Lunaire, updates a traditional opera with trans characters, gender diversity and the gritty, dreamy aesthetic LaBruce is known for.

Nicolas Kazamia chats with LaBruce (in bed) about Gerontophilia, a film that explores a gay intergenerational relationship.

LA Zombie, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010, combines two of LaBruce’s favourite things: the undead and gay men.

Andrew was formerly the associate editor for Daily Xtra.
