B Ruby Rich on this year’s queer film festival circuit

Plus, the most talked about lesbian flick in a decade

B Ruby Rich, who coined the term “New Queer Cinema,” is in Toronto for the Inside Out Film Festival, which runs until Sunday, June 2. Rich will also launch her new book, New Queer Cinema: The Director’s Cut, May 31 at the University of Toronto.

Rich is scheduled to give a talk, which will include rare film clips, on New Queer Cinema on Saturday, June 1 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox as part of Inside Out.

Rich stopped by the Xtra offices to talk with Elle Flanders about her new book and what she thinks about the films on this year’s queer film festival circuit.

“I think we’re in an exciting moment again,” Rich says. “Some of that has to do with the breakdown of traditional distribution and exposition structures so that things are squeaking through again the way that they were in the late ’80s and early ’90s.”

Rich also talks about Blue Is the Warmest Colour, which recently won the Palme d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is the most talked about lesbian flick of the year, if not the decade.
