Archie Comics’ first gay kiss

Kevin Keller creator says anti-gay group One Million Moms helped provide inspiration

Kevin Keller, the gay character in the popular Archie Comics series, will soon be locking lips with another guy. The story line involving the kiss was inspired, in part, by the One Million Moms anti-gay activist group.

“They came out against what we were doing, and that kind of worked out more positively for us,” says Dan Parent, the creator of the Keller character.

“The story is playfully inspired by that.”

Circle your calendars – the kiss issue comes out on Aug 7.

In the video interview below, Parent talks with comic enthusiast Michael Lyons about the creation of Keller, the gay kiss and being honoured at the recent GLAAD Media awards.

On occasion, the number of editors and other staff who contribute to a story gets a little unwieldy to give a byline to everyone. That’s when we use “Xtra Staff” in place of the usual contributor info. If you would like more information on who contributed to a particular story, please contact us here.
