Facebook donates $10,000 to anti-gay Republican’s campaign

Utah AG would ‘spend whatever it takes’ to fight same-sex marriage decision

If you thought endless selfies and inane status updates were bad, this may give you another reason to despise the world’s most popular social networking website.

Pink News reports that Facebook gave $10,000 to Utah incumbent Attorney General Sean Reyes, who has said he’d “spend whatever it takes” to fight the state’s same-sex marriage decision after the court struck down Utah’s marriage ban in December.

“A contribution to a candidate does not mean that we agree with every policy or position that candidate takes,” the publicly traded company said in a statement to Huffington Post. “We made this donation for the same reason we’ve donated to Attorneys General on the opposite side of this issue – because they are committed to fostering innovation and an open Internet.”

The discovery was made by Bob Henline, an assistant editor at a Salt Lake City queer publication who was looking into Reyes’s campaign disclosure. The Facebook donation was the attorney general’s second-largest contribution.

“Being a Facebook user, I had always assumed it was pro-equality and pro-diversity, so it shocked me,” Henline said.

To the informed, this may not be particularly surprising. Boasting more than a billion active monthly users, Facebook has a history of psychotically gunning for nudity and censoring gay pages while allowing pages that promote hate.

Pink News also notes that Facebook’s former president (and Napster creator) Sean Parker (that annoying guy played by Justin Timberlake in The Social Network) is actively financially supporting anti-gay Republican candidates.
