Pride recovery tips

Stock up on vitamins! Or maybe head to the spa...

This sort of flawless decision-making usually leads me to believe that guzzling vodka straight out of the bottle is the best idea I’ve had in years. So if you see me out this Pride swaying on a dance floor in a pair of boxer briefs with my eyes closed, you’ll know that I once again succumbed to Pride’s siren call of excess.

Here are some of the things I make sure to do before during and after Pride to keep the party going:

***

SLEEP IN A DARK ROOM FOR A WEEK

If you don’t have to work, don’t! Word to the wise, avoid your friend’s Dante’s Cove marathons at all costs.

***

A DAY AT THE SPA

After a week of spoiling yourself, nothing feels better than spoiling yourself some more. Words like “detox” and “cleansing” are spa-ese for hangover treatments. Deep tissue and Thai massage are good for getting your blood flowing.

***

STOCK UP ON 5-HTP AND LIQUID MELATONIN

Whatever your plans entail, taking these two supplements regularly may help prevent a post-Pride crash-and-burn. 5-HTP is a natural anti-depressant and helps your brain produce serotonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps people achieve and maintain deep sleep. If you have an auto-immune disorder or are taking prescription medication, make sure to consult with a doctor before taking either.

***

WATER, WATER, AND MORE WATER

The rule of thumb is one glass of water per one serving of alcohol. Those ambulances at Sunset Beach every year after the Pride parade mostly service dehydrated parties, so check yourself before you wreck yourself.

***

GET IN THE WATER

It’s not just for drinking, you know. Hit the pool and stay hydrated on every level.

***

GET TESTED

Play safe this weekend and every weekend, and when you’re done drop by your clinic of choice for a quick prick.
