Choice events in the city this week

Thursday, Nov 24

Lights Of Hope

Like many of us old timers whose years are numbered in the West End due to age and costs, St Paul’s Hospital can seem like a symbol of hope, especially when it’s all lit up like the gates of heaven. Every year the hospital lights up its Lights Of Hope to raise money for patient care projects. If you would like to see your name or a loved one’s name in lights with a star on the display, contact them at 604-806-8831. Join in the fun tonight as fireworks, food trucks, hot chocolate and some of the city’s best choirs entertain at this free event.

6–8pm. St Paul’s Hospital, 1081 Burrard St. facebook.com/events/342441802775609

Spencer’s Rental Forum

Our MLA for the West End, Spencer Chandra Herbert, may be one of those people who speak softly but carry a big stick. Not that I personally know how big a stick he carries, but when needed, that little ball of energy can boom it out with the best of them. I would hate to be at a decibel-shattering debate between Spencer and Barb Snelgrove. Tonight, Spencer fights for renters’ rights, something especially important to the West End, since 80 percent of residents here rent, he says. Join him and others to learn, share stories and find ways to address this crisis.

6:30pm. St Paul’s Church, 1130 Jervis St. facebook.com/SChandraHerbert

The Ryan And Amy Show Part 2

You may think that this is a rerun of Tuesday’s show but you would be so wrong. I have been told that this is a new show for all the little hornies in the neighbourhood, which means at some point someone will probably be naked. I know what you are all thinking: is it Ryan, is it Amy — but we can see that anytime as they will drop trou for anyone. Please, powers that be, let it be Strongjaws. Now that is would be worth the price of admission! See you there, front row centre.

8–10pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $10 and info at ryanandamyshow.com/

Friday, Nov 25

Emily Carr Student Art Sale

If I had a dollar for every gay guy that’s gone to Emily Carr, I would be living in a lot more luxury than I am now. You can’t toss a coin in the bar without hitting a budding artist, animation creator, ceramics artiste, clothing designer; the list is endless. This weekend is your chance to find undiscovered talent and pay a fraction of what it will be worth years from now. Got an eye for prospects? Now is the time to use it.

12–8pm today, 12–5pm Saturday and Sunday. Emily Carr University of Art + Design, 1399 Johnson St, Granville Island. Free entrance. facebook.com/events/165206537276343/

Full Length Fridays

Think of a club where the entertainer is constantly checking out the goods in the men’s room between sets, where maybe even I could get a good grope. Now picture the same night with two of those entertainers and, god help us, it has happened: Carlotta Gurl and Peach Cobblah together in a club that has a stripper pole in it. With Gingerbear Todd as the DJ, VJ and referee, this could be a night to remember. Come see the most unique and visual dance experience yet — and that’s just with the two gurls on stage. Always a fun night, come see for yourself.

9pm–3am. The Odyssey, 686 W Hastings St. Cover $5 or free with taxi receipt. facebook.com/events/689922161184212/

Wet & Wild

When it’s a holiday weekend in the US but not here, what do we do? Go trolling to Seattle for men? Of course not. We are Canadian. They come to us: we are hotter, our beer is stronger and erections are set free in the local bar. For all those American college boys and bears, tonight PJ has an abundance of muscle daddy dick in the shower and on the stage. Forget the turkey, boys, you’ll be the ones to get stuffed. DJ Mumbles is on dick, I mean, deck (the other comes later).

10pm. Pumpjack Pub, 1167 Davie St. No cover before 9pm, $5 after. pumpjackpub.com

Christmas Market

I admit it: the first time I went, I had to be dragged to this event as I’m not big on family-orientated events. But imagine my surprise when we walked into the market and saw dozens of gays on dates, with beer in steins, mulled wine and a few cocktail places scattered around the market. Now I am hooked and already have my tickets for this year. It is a great place to do some holiday shopping for gift from soaps to sweaters. Just don’t be like me and get too tipsy and leave your bags on the carousel (yes, there is a carousel!). This year the market has moved from Queen Elizabeth Plaza to its new location.

11am–9pm daily until Saturday, Dec 31. Closed Christmas Day. Jack Poole Plaza, 1055 Canada Place. Tickets $8–50 at store.vancouverchristmasmarket.com/. For all my readers, here is a gift for you: if you go to groupon.com/deals/vancouver-christmas-market-7 you will get up to 38 percent of a discount on your package tickets.

The Vaginal Variety Show: A Bloody Good Time

I won’t be attending this one myself, but April O’Peel and Diva Fandango present an art and variety show dedicated to the Magic of Menstruation, featuring period-themed art and comedy. Plus you can save $5 off the admission if you bring unopened feminine hygiene products to be donated to people in the Downtown Eastside.

8pm–12am. Red Gate Arts Society, 855 E Hastings St. $15 at door. facebook.com/events/1792193334372136

Loli*Pop: Bedroom*Fantasy

I got a bit of a response to this event a few months back, so let me say again that I don’t name these events; I just go with the names their producers give them. This one, I’m told, stands for Loli, derived from the term Lolita, and Pop, derived from a type of music often listened to by young girls or gay men who are bottoms. Organizers Ilona, Eva Scarlett and their special guest Cleopatra Compton invite you to join them for a super-fun slumber party that’ll leave you feeling nice and naughty.

9pm–3am. The Odyssey, 686 W Hastings St. Tickets $5 at theoyssey.ca. More info at facebook.com/events/684239115086172/

Bearracuda

The bears are back in full force for the sixth anniversary of their first Vancouver invasion. I will be there in full force, since this is where I met my sometimes-better half six years ago. This year, the party is back in the largest space in town, open for this event only, so there will be lots of spots to meet new friends, as hundreds of hot men party the night away.

9pm–3am. 560, 560 Seymour St. Tickets $15 at Top Drawers, 809 Davie St or bearracuda.com.

Underwear Party

I love underwear nights: you get to check out the goods before heading home. Sure, there may still be a surprise or two in those tiny briefs, but hopefully for the better. And what would a good old fashioned, horny, sweaty, dirty and hopefully packed underwear party be without DJ Del Stamp, the man who is more comfortable in other people’s skivvies than his own? There is no lost and found for underwear, so watch yours.

10pm. Pumpjack Pub, 1167 Davie St. $5 cover after pm. pumpjackpub.com

Sunday, Nov 27

Davie Village Mannequin Challenge

I know this is a throwback to childish pranks, but if I came across a group of guys standing still like mannequins — told they can’t move or they’ll lose the challenge — I’d be pulling down their zippers and running for the hills! The theme is love, so dress and prop accordingly if you want to join in. What will your Love pose be, and how long can you hold it?

2–5pm. Jim Deva Plaza, 1200 Bute St. Free event. facebook.com/events/1075044915975335/

Tuesday, Nov 29

Stack The Rack 2016

Now we’re talking: here’s a fundraiser where you can taste the best wines BC has to offer, with over 200 other guests in a fantastic garden rooftop in the heart of the city, and at the same time raise money for Qmunity.

6:30–9:30pm. Telus Garden, 510 W Georgia St. Tickets $170 at eventbrite.ca. More info at facebook.com/events/209195932834581/

Wednesday, Nov 30

Piano Bar

After a full weekend like last, I need a night where I can kick back, have some relaxing drinks, listen to some music and hum along with some showtunes. (Don’t worry, I’ll stick with humming, not singing. I think I’m tone deaf. But the rest of you can sing, drink, listen, laugh and enjoy an interactive night of live piano and showtunes.

9pm–2am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. No cover. facebook.com/events/216442802115111/
