Lights Of Hope
Like many of us old timers whose years are numbered in the West End due to age and costs, St Paul’s Hospital can seem like a symbol of hope, especially when it’s all lit up like the gates of heaven. Every year the hospital lights up its Lights Of Hope to raise money for patient care projects. If you would like to see your name or a loved one’s name in lights with a star on the display, contact them at 604-806-8831. Join in the fun tonight as fireworks, food trucks, hot chocolate and some of the city’s best choirs entertain at this free event.

Spencer’s Rental Forum
Our MLA for the West End, Spencer Chandra Herbert, may be one of those people who speak softly but carry a big stick. Not that I personally know how big a stick he carries, but when needed, that little ball of energy can boom it out with the best of them. I would hate to be at a decibel-shattering debate between Spencer and Barb Snelgrove. Tonight, Spencer fights for renters’ rights, something especially important to the West End, since 80 percent of residents here rent, he says. Join him and others to learn, share stories and find ways to address this crisis.

Christmas Market
I admit it: the first time I went, I had to be dragged to this event as I’m not big on family-orientated events. But imagine my surprise when we walked into the market and saw dozens of gays on dates, with beer in steins, mulled wine and a few cocktail places scattered around the market. Now I am hooked and already have my tickets for this year. It is a great place to do some holiday shopping for gift from soaps to sweaters. Just don’t be like me and get too tipsy and leave your bags on the carousel (yes, there is a carousel!). This year the market has moved from Queen Elizabeth Plaza to its new location.

The Vaginal Variety Show: A Bloody Good Time
I won’t be attending this one myself, but April O’Peel and Diva Fandango present an art and variety show dedicated to the Magic of Menstruation, featuring period-themed art and comedy. I got a bit of a response to this event a few months back, so let me say again that I don’t name these events; I just go with the names their producers give them. This one, I’m told, stands for Loli, derived from the term Lolita, and Pop, derived from a type of music often listened to by young girls or gay men who are bottoms. Organizers Ilona, Eva Scarlett and their special guest Cleopatra Compton invite you to join them for a super-fun slumber party that’ll leave you feeling nice and naughty.

Bearracuda
The bears are back in full force for the sixth anniversary of their first Vancouver invasion. I will be there in full force, since this is where I met my sometimes-better half six years ago. This year, the party is back in the largest space in town, open for this event only, so there will be lots of spots to meet new friends, as hundreds of hot men party the night away.

I love underwear nights: you get to check out the goods before heading home. Sure, there may still be a surprise or two in those tiny briefs, but hopefully for the better.
