Out in Vancouver: June 23-29, 2016

Choice events in the city this week

Thursday, June 23

Museum of Vancouver: All Together Now

I have never been one for mainstream events, but this show is right up my alley since it’s about Vancouver collectors and their unconventional collections. From action figures to corsets to toasters and even costumes from the drag group The Bovines. Remember them? Show runs until Sunday, Jan 8, 2017.

10am–5pm. Museum of Vancouver, 1100 Chestnut St, Vanier Park. Admission children $5, senior/student $11, adult $15. museumofvancouver.ca

Queerotica

Who doesn’t enjoy a good dirty read? Join the Queer Arts Festival tonight for a soiree of erotic readings to get the old juices flowing. This year’s edition of Queerotica is dedicated to writing by queer women, including trans women.

7pm. Roundhouse Community Arts Centre, 181 Roundhouse Mews. $1–5 sliding scale at door. facebook.com/events/249478455442322

Nude Model Drawing

I will not be modelling for this; I don’t want other guys to feel inadequate! Explore your inner artist at this free seminar and don’t worry, no experience is needed. Paper, supplies and a nude model will be provided. All genders are welcome.

7:30–9:30pm. The Art Of Loving, 369 West Broadway St. Free event. Please register at 604-742-9988. dailyxtra.com/lgbt-events/vancouver/art-and-exhibits/nude-model-drawing

Man Up Impersonations

As if this talented group of kings didn’t entertain enough, now they are expanding into a Femme Celebrity Impersonation Show. I already get so gender confused at their shows that I don’t know which bathroom to use. Join them for what’s sure to be a great night of entertainment, as always.

9pm–2am. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. Cover $8 before 10pm, $13 after. facebook.com/events/1259653544086755/

Yoga With HIM

Pride is weeks away and you know what that means: if you’re not able to suck your own dick, you’re not limber enough to handle the onslaught of fresh meat coming to town. Here is your weekly chance to increase your flexibility and circulation, and be the hit of any orgy. HIM is an easy-going group of great guys without attitude, so even the inexperienced are made to feel at ease. Bring own mat and towel.

7–8:15pm. Scotiabank Dance Centre, 677 Davie St. Entrance by donation. checkhimout.ca/ai1ec_event/yoga-with-him/?instance_id=20972

Lyle Chan: An AIDS Activist’s Memoir In Music

This Australian composer gave up music from 1991–1996 to courier AIDS drugs from the US that were unavailable in Australia. Performed by the Acacia Quartet and narrated by Chan himself, the work is a tour-de-force of powerful music, containing portraits of famous activist friends now dead, and unusual effects. Read our story.

7pm. Roundhouse Performance Centre, 181 Roundhouse Mews. Tickets $15–30 at brownpapertickets.com. More info at facebook.com/events/1695471384038782

Saturday, June 25

East Side Pride

I love East Side Pride as it always falls during my birthday week so it’s like one huge party for me. Plus it gets us all in tune for Vancouver Pride. Held at the site of Vancouver’s historic Stonewall Festival, this alcohol-free event brings out vendors, artisans, community groups, bands, food and of course some of East Van’s top drag performers.

12pm. Grandview Park, 1657 Charles St. Free event. facebook.com/events/1541071812862561/

Out In Harmony: Summer Nights

Formerly known as the Vancouver Gay and Lesbian Choir, Out in Harmony invites you to join them for a concert to evoke summer nights.

7pm. Unitarian Church of Vancouver, 949 West 49th Ave. Tickets $10–15 and info at eventbrite.com

Bawdyhaus

Gingerbear Todd may be in Facebook jail (where if you drop the soap you’ll just have to get it yourself, where’s the fun in that?) but that hasn’t stopped the little red powerhouse. This is a backdoor party (not affiliated with any other parties that use a backdoor entrance as well, don’t put me in FB jail), where you have to enter through the backdoor located on Blood Alley. Featuring go-go muscle bears and lots of pervy naked fun. See you there.

9pm–3am. The Hindenburg, 23 West Cordova St (Blood Alley entrance). Cover $5. facebook.com/events/992617497512578/

Blowpony

No, this isn’t a show in some Tijuana drunk fest bar, where animals may be involved. This is an evening of fierceness, faggotry and fuckery, hosted by Jem with go-go dancers and DJs Airick X, Quest and G-Luve. Special guest Will Sheridan.

9:30pm. The Waldorf, 1489 East Hastings St. Cover $10 at door. facebook.com/events/511993682333386/

Downtown

The last time I asked a lesbian if she was going “downtown” I almost got my face slapped. This Downtown has nothing to do with the crotch area; it’s a new way of keeping the dance crowd happy. The DJ plays the music curated by the crowd, so keep the requests coming. You can even make your requests when you purchase tickets. (Adam Dreaddy would be rolling over in his grave at this if he weren’t in Montreal.)

9:45pm–2am. The Refinery, 1115 Granville St. Tickets $15 at facebook.com/events/1142924855766283/

Sunday, June 26

Greek Day

I can just see Del Stamp reading this and booking a three-hour colonic to get ready. But this isn’t that type of Greek, people. Bring your appetite as there are men and food as far as the eye can see. Five blocks of food, music, culture, vendors and entertainment all celebrating the Greek culture. Gia Mas!

11am–9pm. West Broadway St from MacDonald St to Blenheim St. Free entrance. greekday.com/

Surrey Pride

Surrey is set to make history today with its first Pride parade! The parade will start at Surrey City Hall plaza, then head down University Boulevard to Holland Park, where the annual Pride festival will get underway, with food vendors, entertainment and even a bouncy castle where you may find Barb Snelgrove bobbing around.

12–5pm. Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Road, Surrey. surreypride.ca/

Art Salon

Hosted by our own little bundle of energy, Daily Xtra’s Robin Perelle, who will invite you to discuss this question: What needs to change in Vancouver to support, and even celebrate, edgy queer art for social change? In the past, queer artists have been blocked, blacklisted or simply gone unrecognized for their social change focused creations. Do our artists have to leave this conservative city to express themselves? Part of the Queer Arts Festival.

2pm. Exhibition Hall, Roundhouse Community Centre, 181 Roundhouse Mews. Entrance by donation. queerartsfestival.com/event/salon/

Queer History Discussion Night

Sounds more like the old timers sitting around Pumpjack mid-afternoon, trying to out-reminisce each other about the Castle, the Royal or any other gay establishment that is long gone. Mpowerment hopes to pass on knowledge to the younger generation about how far we have come. From remembering a time when homosexuality was illegal, to honouring the folks who spoke up and fought for LGBT rights, this discussion night aims to help us feel more connected to our history.

6:30pm. Mpowerment Headquarters, 568 Seymour St. Free event. facebook.com/events/996881227015766

50 Feet Of Rope

Finally an event I can get my teeth into: a night of erotic rope bondage. You’ll learn the basic ties and how to apply them creatively to different parts of the body, as well as rope safety, where you can and can’t tie. Learn how to turn the art of tying into a sensual erotic experience for everyone.

7:30–9:30pm. The Art Of Loving, 369 West Broadway St. Tickets $30 at artofloving.ca. More info at facebook.com/events/616520651846623/

Karaoke

I really can’t promise that Ryan Steele won’t hog the mic and belt out two hours of songs, but sometimes that’s better than his jokes. Seriously though, karaoke in a bar that makes you feel like you are headlining in Vegas, that’s a rush for any singer. Over 100,000 songs to sing and host Jordan to help you along the way.

9pm–2am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. No cover. facebook.com/groups/1250584251625875/

Connect With HIM

Sometimes it’s hard to meet other guys that want friends instead of fuck buddies, or sometimes we need someone to talk with someone who doesn’t know us personally. The Health Initiative for Men offers a weekly Wednesday night get-together that covers all that. Nights include: Men On Men Talks, SpeedConnect, Sex, Intimacy and Relationships and, to laugh it up, GAYmzNite. Whatever your needs or problems HIM is here to help. Please check online to see which Wednesday you need.

6:30-8pm. HIM Office, 310-1033 Davie St. Free event. checkhimout.ca/ai1ec_event/connect/?instance_id=21320

Drop me a line if you want your GLBT themed event, meeting, social, gathering, play party, circle jerk, listed online or even if you are one short for your orgy. I always aim to please.....unless its your eye...ouch!!!
