Choice events in the city this week

Thursday, July 7

Dancing On The Edge

In my mind I dance like these pros, but in reality I know I’m more like Elaine on Seinfeld, who always seemed one step away from a seizure. Tonight the 28th annual festival gets underway for 10 nights with more than 30 choreographers and 80 dance artists in venues all around the city. Keep an eye out for Joshua Beamish and Noam Gagnon’s collaboration in “Edge Four” on Monday, July 11 and Wednesday, July 13. For a full schedule of shows, venues and times go to dancingontheedge.org

Festival runs tonight until Saturday, July 16. Tickets $22–28 for a single show, $85 four pack, $120 six pack at tickets.firehallartscentre.ca

Straight Outta Oz

Somehow I don’t think we’ll see the hot shower scenes that we all PVR’d Oz the TV series to watch. This is Todrick Hall putting a new twist on the old Dorothy classic, with more than 20 new songs, but no prisoners in sight.

Doors 6:30pm, show 7:30pm. Vogue Theatre, 918 Granville St. Tickets $20–100 at ticketfly.com. Info at facebook.com/events/1204230679601680/

Vancouver Men In Leather Gear Night

You are generally encouraged to wear jocks, latex, leather or some other type of fetish wear at these events, but how embarrassing would it be if you pulled on something an old trick once left behind and he recognizes it? I can tell you, horrifying. Time for me to do some shopping, apparently. Tonight pull out your leather, sports gear, jocks, latex or other fetish wear and catch up with old friends and new acquaintances. Come back to the pool table where the lights are low and the men are friendly, very friendly. Stay and get horned up as Wet & Wild takes over at 11pm.

8–11pm. The Pumpjack Pub, 1167 Davie St. Cover $5 after 9pm.

Cirque Sensuel

Promoting an event called Cirque Sensual with the phrase “let DJ Del Stamp set the mood” could bring a whole new meaning to sword swallowing. Join Ringmaster Reive Doig, with performances by The Mighty Quinn, Sierra Tasi Baker and more. It’s an evening sure to please even the faint of heart.

9:30pm. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. Cover $10 at door. junctionpub.com/events/cirque-sensuel-4/

Hustla: Summer Slam

Peach Cobblah is in the wrong business: she has the personality and drive to make a fortune as a madame. The bitch never seems to sleep and no matter what party she throws, you know you’re going to see dick at some point in the night. Tonight is no exception. Homo Hip Hop continues with Peach as host, so come sweat your clothes off and don’t let Peach drag you to the makeout corner — that’s not really part of the audition. And as the old gal says, “Dance yo face off, whip yo dicks out.”

10:30pm–2am. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. Cover $9–12. facebook.com/events/1791114387786249/

Saturday, July 9

Youthful Faerie Potluck Picnic

This group is always so cheerful and friendly, even their posters look like a Warner Bros cartoon where Bugs Bunny will jump out of the picnic basket at any time. Not that I will be attending, as they are a group for guys in their mid-30s and younger. But if you are a self-identified man who loves men, and are Faerie adjacent or Fae curious, then this is for you. A picnic in the park to create community for those looking to make a connection with men closer to their age. Please bring a potluck dish and whatever you want to drink.

6–10pm. Stanley Park Rose Garden, 610 Pipeline Rd. Free event. facebook.com/events/290340907972990/

XY Saturday

No matter where I go, or what I do, there is Peach Cobblah. I think this woman is stalking me. Tonight she joins host Shanda Leer at her 70s-style sketch comedy show, with drag numbers, live interviews and Carol Burnett-type laughs.

8pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. $5 cover also gives you entry to ONYX after the show. facebook.com/events/247276245640268/

The Drag Show: Whalley Days Edition

I know many of you are thinking: “Where the hell is Whalley?” Well, it is the patch between New Westminster and Surrey, just as you get over the Pattullo Bridge, so yes, it’s a fancy way of saying Surrey. Mz Adrien and a gaggle of drag divas will be performing their hearts out for you. Time for a road trip!

8—10pm. The Flamingo Hotel, 10768 King George Hwy, Surrey. Cover TBA. facebook.com/events/1785570795010556

Harness

If you thought Kiki La Whore had found her sugar daddy and was retired and living the life of leisure and had forgotten about us, you were wrong. She is back, and performing for you tonight courtesy of the RUFF producers. Dress code will be in effect, so get out your leather, rubber, jocks, underwear, sports or fetish wear and of course remember your harness. DJs Del Stamp and Zarafan, along with the Men of Harness, will get you hot and sweaty.

9pm–3am. The Hindenburg, 23 West Cordova St. Tickets $15 until Friday, July 8, then $20 day of at eventbee.com and at the door. facebook.com/events/588037121356660/

Rubber Ball

Is it just me, or are there a lot of events this year that require you to be wrapped in rubber, latex, and spandex? I dread the one where I am going to be wrapped with Saran Wrap. Why the summer? Why not winter when you want to be warm and sweaty?Sin City has a strict dress code tonight guaranteed to give rubber lovers a latex orgasm. GBLTQ, straight, couples, singles, hard-core, cross-dressers, and newbies are all welcome, organizers say. Minimum one piece of rubber clothing or you will be denied entry (and no, a condom does not count). No casual street wear allowed. Bring your toys and accessories; this is a full-scale sex-positive party.

10pm–3am. Club 8×6, 1775 Haro St. Tickets $20 at ticketzone.com as Rubberfest 2016. facebook.com/events/1673687892898751/

Victoria Pride Parade And Festival

After a week of festivities, today marks the parade and festival, which could make a great weekend escape for us Vancouverites, and possibly a little out-of-town action on the side. After all, that is one of the perks of Pride weekends in my gay handbook. Both the parade and festival are free events, and the festival will feature vendors, artists, support groups, a beer garden, food, entertainment and more.

Parade 12–1pm, from Government Street to MacDonald Park, where the festival takes place from 1–6pm. victoriapridesociety.org

Let’s Talk About Sex

Normally I would be horrified to talk about sins of the flesh with a nun. But it’s the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and those gals have done way more trashy things than I could ever hope to do. Tonight they present the All Bodies Safer Package, so guest speakers will be here to educate about the increase in STI transmission in our community. Speakers include Jenn Matsui, Emily Sollows, Michelle Reed and Daily Xtra’s very own Dr Ruth columnist, Kevin Moroso, to show us how to have a safer, fuller sex life.

5pm. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. This event is a fundraiser for the Sisters so $5 is suggested but please donate more if you can. facebook.com/YVRsisters/

Anal Play For Women: Live Demo

Just when you think I couldn’t shock you anymore, I pull another one out of the hat. (It’s the Live Demo part that did it, isn’t it?) Prostate play is awesome for men, but how do women feel? Can a woman enjoy anal play? Come tonight and find out as Robyn (not Xtra’s little Robin) presents a workshop and demo to explore the unexplored for women and help everyone have a good time.

7:30pm. The Art Of Loving, 369 West Broadway St. Workshop $50, register at artofloving.ca/seminars/seminar-topics/anal-play-women-live-demo.

Karaoke

I, like many of you, have been crushing on Ryan Steele for years, since before he was a video icon. Now I can finally serenade him as he gazes from behind the bar and I take the mic for Karaoke Tuesdays. The question is which song from their 100,000-song bank will finally snare him? (Maybe “Cherry Pie.” Look it up.) This is your chance to sing your heart out or just come in to watch the fun. Maybe you will even make a few tips.

9pm–2am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. No cover. facebook.com/groups/1250584251625875/

Wednesday, July 13

Women & Queer Night

I’ve always wondered why guy’s bikes have the bar and girls don’t? But that’s not the focus of tonight’s bike workshop. This AMS Bike Co-Op night is to learn all about bike mechanics and how to take care of your equipment. Workshop takes place the second Wednesday of each month for all female-identified and LGBTQ people.

6–9pm. AMS Bike Kitchen, Lower Level, 6138 SUB Blvd, UBC Campus. Workshop is free. bikecoop.ca

Whitecaps Pride Night

Stop fantasizing about soccer-player scenarios and get out to a stadium full of queers, soccer players and gluteus maximus-hugging shorts as Whitecaps Pride Night takes place with the theme “You have the right to play.” See them take on team Real Salt Lake as BC Place is illuminated with its rainbow lights.

7:30pm. BC Place Stadium, 777 Pacific Blvd. Tickets $25 from Celestina at 604-669-9283 ext 2207 or at eventbrite.ca.

Self-Defense For Ladies And Queers

Dave Schuck is offering some free self-defence training, with background skills and useful fundamentals for all. Tonight is the first training, so show up on time, wear something comfortable and bring your own water. Before I get any emails, I did not name this class; it was given to me this way.

7:30pm. Eastside Boxing Club, 238 Keefer St. Free.
