dance Immersion celebrates 20 years with a world premiere by KasheDance

Kevin Ormsby’s company KasheDance brings three of its works, including a world premiere, to the ExpressionsSNow showcase in April 2014.

The showcase celebrates dance Immersion’s 20 years of supporting and promoting African diaspora dance. Along with KasheDance, the event will feature Athens, Ohio’s Azaguno troupe. Part of Harbourfront’s NextSteps program, the show will have a two-day run at the Enwave Theatre.

KasheDance, celebrating its fifth anniversary, will feature three pieces variously performed by the company’s eight dancers. Each piece has been choreographed by Ormsby himself, blending diaspora with modern dance and ballet.

Ke-ashe (Interludes Within), which debuted in 2011, aims to convey the struggle from personal restraint to freedom and will be performed in Toronto for the first time at the showcase. Recalcitaire explores the relationship between dance and music, featuring a unique musical blend of cello and kora. , making its world debut during the showcase, investigates memory and bodies in motion using both Afro beat and house music.

All three pieces embody the diversity and blending of technique, form and presentation that have become the hallmarks of KasheDance.
