John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as gay grooms in new movie

John Lithgow and Alfred Molina are pictured as a gay couple from New York who finally decide to get married after 38 years together in a still from director Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange.

“This is the high-point before the drama in the story,” Sachs said. “The consequences of this marriage is one of the men loses his job, and that sets off the rest of the events of the film. This is a sweet film, and I found two actors who, in a way, some of their best known-work has been playing gay men. Really, what I got was two of the best actors of their generation who responded emotionally to the story that was told.”

Sachs revealed the film is inspired by the 2011 legalization of marriage in New York State and has been independently financed because major studios aren’t funding gay features — which is why the Liberace bio-pic Behind the Candelabra eventually found its way to HBO.

Love Is Strange will make its premiere on the 2014 festival circuit.
