Calling young gay filmmakers

Out in Schools seeks participants for anti-homophobia filmmaking boot camp

Young gay filmmakers in BC are being invited to an anti-homophobia filmmaking boot camp to explore the world of motion pictures.

The No Hate program takes place over the school spring break Mar 16-20, and aims to teach participants how to create their own collaborative videos.

There are 15 spaces available and the deadline to apply is Feb 27.

Application forms can be downloaded at outinschools.com.

The boot camp is being run by the Out in Schools program in collaboration with Reel Youth.

Out in Schools is operated through the Out on Screen society which runs the Vancouver Queer Film Festival.

Films created will be featured as part of both the Out in Schools and Out on Screen presentations this year. This year’s queer film fest runs from Aug 13-23.

The Out in Schools program promotes safe and diverse learning environments by bringing independent, queer film to high schools throughout BC.

For the past four years, the program has delivered more than 130 presentations, and has reached more than 6,000 students throughout the province.

On Feb 16, Out in Schools is also sponsoring a special screening of Hineni: Coming Out in a Jewish High School, which tells the story of Shulamit Izen and her struggle in school as she wrestles with questions of self, family, community, religion and God. A panel discussion will follow the film featuring members from the Jewish and gay communities.

The event takes place 6- 8:45 pm at King David High School, 5718 Willow St.
