David Bowie exhibit lands in Toronto

Multimedia installation features some of the pop icon's best costumes and artifacts

David Bowie Is opens at Toronto AGO.

For a couple of months this fall, the Art Gallery of Ontario will be the coolest place on Earth. Direct from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, where it shattered attendance records, David Bowie Is opened Sept 25 and runs until Nov 27. The exhibit spans the gender-bending performer’s career and is assembled from Bowie’s personal archives, clothing, artifacts and, of course, music.

Long before Madonna, Prince, Lady Gaga or Miley, Bowie redefined what a pop star looked, and sounded, like. He donned numerous guises in his career, from David Robert Jones, to Ziggy Stardust, to the Thin White Duke. Whether he was pushing the boundaries of acceptable behaviour by wearing elaborately sequined jumpsuits with balloon legs or tight jumpsuits that revealed a slender androgynous frame, Bowie has been a style icon who also happened to write superior pop tunes.

David Bowie Is chronicles the five-decade career of a performer who has redefined culture and art. In the interview above, Xtra chats with the AGO’s Jim Shedden about the exhibit.
