In 2010, Brendan Burke, the son of Toronto Maple Leafs’ general manager Brian Burke, died in a car crash. Three months earlier, Burke had come out and had spoken publicly about wanting to bring an end to homophobia in professional sports, most notably hockey, one of his true loves.
To honour his son’s memory, Brian Burke, along with his other son, Patrick, created the You Can Play Project, which aims to get rid of homophobia in sports, and specifically in locker rooms.
