Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi passed bill HB1523 on April 5, 2016. The bill protects religious beliefs — in short, it allows any business owners the right to deny services to LGBT people.
What a time to be alive.
Fortunately, one Toronto radio station had the perfect way to protest the bill’s passing.
“We’ll use love, and entertainment, and humour to fight back,” said Roz Weston, co-host on the Roz & Mocha Show on Toronto’s KiSS 92.5.
Their plan?
Serenade supporters of the bill with classic gay anthems.
Reporter Maurie, more affectionately known as Damnit Maurie, took to the phones to find the people and organizations who supported the bill.
Bethenny, director of scheduling for the governor, was treated to the dulcet tones of “All That Jazz.”
She promptly hung up.
The governor’s mansion got a pretty rendition of “I Will Survive,” but Maurie was hung up on only a few bars in.
Alliance Defending Freedom, an American conservative Christian nonprofit organization, was more receptive to Maurie’s warbling of a classic Rent piece. “That’s beautiful!” exclaimed the man at the end of the line.
You’re doing God’s work, Maurie.
