An application for a licence plate that reads “N0H0M0” was approved by the Alabama Department of Revenue despite going through a three-person review panel, which considers each application for personalized plates.
A man named Scott Johnston photographed the plate and tells ThinkProgress he was “first shocked, then angered” by its homophobic message. “How could [the Alabama Department of Revenue] allow outright discrimination to be published on a state license plate?” he asks.
“There are more than 6,000 plates that are strictly banned and will not be allowed on any tag in the state,” says Amanda Collier, spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Revenue, in a statement to ThinkProgress. Those plates include “anything explicit, any profanity, or vulgar language.”
