New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has slammed the US Supreme Court for “imposing” same-sex marriage and says each state should have “the ability to decide on their own” whether it should be legalized.

The Supreme Court declined on Oct 6 to review appeals of same-sex marriage rulings by lower courts, legalizing marriage for all citizens of Virginia, Wisconsin, Indiana, Oklahoma and Utah.

Same-sex marriage was legalized in New Jersey in 2013 after Christie’s administration dropped its legal challenge of a lower-court ruling allowing gay couples to marry in the state.
