South Africa: Man arrested in connection with lesbian’s murder

Accused will appear before a magistrate

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a lesbian and will appear before a magistrate next week, Pink News reports.

Duduzile Zozo, 26, was found dead in Thokoza, east of Johannesburg at the end of June. Last seen at a local club, Zozo was found with a toilet brush lodged in her vagina, police said.

Her mother, Thuziwe Zozo, told The Daily Sun newspaper that she suspects her daughter was murdered because of her sexuality. “She was a lesbian but she has never had any problems before. People loved and appreciated her.”

Zozo’s death follows those of seven other people, five of them lesbians, who were murdered between June and November last year in incidents that appear to be motivated by discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, the report says.
