Safe Schools Act coming

Vancouver-Burrard MLA Lorne Mayencourt told Xtra West Feb 18 that the newest incarnation of his private member’s bill, the Safe Schools Act, should be available online and tabled in the BC Legislature in the coming weeks.

“It’s on the order paper now. It’s a bill that will come up over the course of the spring session,” he says.

Mayencourt says the bill still has to go through legislative committee. He anticipates it should be ready and available for review online “toward the middle of March.”

If passed, the Act will require all BC school boards to implement codes of conduct addressing bullying, with specific provisions prohibiting harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Moving forward with the Safe Schools Act was a plank in Mayencourt’s re-election platform last year, after it languished on the order paper into last year’s provincial election.
