BY ADAM M GLEN – It seems North Carolina’s homophobes can’t figure out how to express their feelings.
The May 8 vote on Amendment One, which if passed would ban same-sex marriage in the state, could go any way. This may be why Sean Harris, the preacher at Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, felt the need to run off his mouth to his congregation. In a recorded sermon, Harris tells Christians at his service, “Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch, okay? You are not going to act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male.”
After his speech went viral and Harris received hundreds of angry phone calls and emails, he said that the sermon was a joke and that he does not advocate hitting children. He does, however, stand by his message: “If I had to say it again, I would say it differently no doubt. Those weren’t planned words, but what I do stand by is that the word of God makes it clear that effeminate behaviour is ungodly. I’m not going to compromise on that.”

Meanwhile, another North Carolinian is taking a slightly more violent approach to venting his Amendment One anger. Seventeen-year-old Jonathan Wiles posted a video of himself shooting a stolen anti-Amendment One sign. Wiles states his support for the amendment before popping on some safety goggles and unloading two shotgun shells into the sign. Less than 24 hours after posting the video, he received a visit from six sheriff’s deputies, who were concerned he had plans to go out and shoot more than just a sign. Though the video was quickly pulled down, it has been reposted on a number of other YouTube channels.
