The Vancouver Park Board has awarded an $852,000 contract to Cedar Crest Lands for the redevelopment of Nelson Park, and work has already begun.
“The fieldhouse has been demolished,” says queer parks commissioner Spencer Herbert. “You can see the first of the work now. It’s actually happening.”
Herbert was hopeful that ground on the much-anticipated project would be broken by last fall, but tenders sent out early last year came back significantly over budget.
Now he expects work to be completed by this fall. The revamped plans include a fountain, children’s playground, more pathways, groundwork to remove boggy sections of land and a community garden.
“The community’s been waiting a long time to see results. Hopefully, people will be happy with the park,” he says.
