It’s International Women’s Day

Starting on a light note this morning, check out this International Women’s Day PSA, featuring 007 hottie Daniel Craig and the mesmerizing Dame Judi Dench.


And something even more sobering: According to UNAIDS, 70 percent of women between ages of 15 and 24 living in sub-Saharan Africa are HIV-positive. In 2005 that was about 13.2 million women and girls. About one in six of them go untreated. That’s not because there isn’t global capacity to treat them, it’s because they cannot afford the meds or are otherwise denied access.

See how easy it should be? Tomorrow bill C-393, will come to final vote in the House of Commons. Its purpose is to reform Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime, helping to cut away some of the red tape that keeps generic Canadian HIV meds from getting into the hands of those who need them. Here’s hoping it passes quickly through the Senate before the election… it’s really the least we could do.

And finally, who is this handsome retro-couple? It’s Clara Zetkin on the left there with her very close friend Rosa Luxemburg. The picture is from 1910, and it was Zetkin who envisioned the very first International Women’s Day in 1911. She is an interesting figure, Google her.
