In Montreal’s gay village, a man in his 20s sustained a fractured skull and was in critical condition after being beaten March 20.
The incident is alleged to have been instigated inside a bar near St Timothée and Ste-Catherine streets about 1:45am. Parties were asked to leave the bar, but the beating continued outside.
“It’s more gang-related. It was not a hate crime. We would say if it looked like one,” says Montreal police spokesperson Olivier LaPointe, adding the man who sustained the beating is not believed to be gay.
After the incident, three men, aged 19, 20 and 23 respectively, were arrested. LaPointe says that while the investigation is still ongoing, police cannot release the men’s names because no charges were laid.
