Website launches ‘hot, nasty’ dyke porn

Bren Ryder was on the fast track to becoming a firefighter when she realized her true calling was to help her community in a different way: by producing hot, dyke sex on film.

“I came to a point where I was asking myself, what do I really want to do?” says Ryder. “My plan was to do firefighting and then porn on the side, but I decided that was not really how I wanted it to be done.

“I felt like porn should be out in public, it should be unashamed, and I chose to dedicate my life to creating websites with dyke porn films all the time.”

After a year of hard work, Ryder celebrated the launch of her new website GoodDykePorn.com with a lively party and film screening at Video In on Sep 29. Complete with its own ‘private’ bedroom equipped with a video camera feeding images to the rest of the guests, the party gave dyke-porn wannabes a playful taste of what it’s like to be on other side of the camera, as well as a sneak peek at some scorching new scenes to be featured on the website.

Scenes like the one featuring Aya Ruckus, a voluptuous redhead who tosses her hair back as she eagerly yanks open her lover’s jeans to reveal a large, strap-on dildo. Sliding a condom onto the dildo, she jacks off her lover Eddie’s silicone cock before taking it into her mouth.

Eddie then rips open Aya’s blouse to reveal a hot pink bustier. Aya’s breasts spill over the top as she mounts Eddie and begins to moan.

Good Dyke Porn premiered to a packed crowd at Vancouver’s Queer Film Festival in August and is now touring the festival circuit, playing in a diverse collection of cities like Lisbon, Berlin and Rochester.

But anyone can access Ryder’s porn from the comfort of home on GoodDykePorn.com. The website features a variety of porn scenes, to be updated regularly, with special access granted to registered members for a monthly fee.

Ryder began producing her porn as a fresh alternative for those wanting to see real, raw, sex between dykes — as opposed to between a couple of straight girls with bouncing double-D breasts who don’t actually know one another.

“Dyke porn is a genre. I just made up that genre because it doesn’t really exist,” Ryder explains when asked about classifying her films. “There’s lesbian porn that’s girl on girl, that’s totally different. That’s produced by men and doesn’t resemble what women do together. Dyke porn is like queer porn because it includes trans men and it’s very fluid with sexuality and gender. So it’s hard to specifically classify it as dyke porn, but I do because I want to include all those things in the word dyke.”

Though there are a few dyke porn films that can be found in select video stores, there’s very little to be found online amid the hundreds of thousands of mainstream and even gay porn sites. Not only is Ryder filling a niche, but as a Vancouverite it seems her work has become a source of pride for the community.

“I get e-mails from people frequently just voicing their support. I think that queer women are looking for it mostly because they know that it doesn’t exist. They’ve looked for it and they know that it’s really hard to find, or that what they want to see isn’t out there,” Ryder says.

Support was evident in spades at the website launch, and it was clear from the burst of applause and cheers as the movie title flashed across the screen that good dyke porn is certainly needed.

“I thought it was great,” says Zena Sharman, one of the party’s attendees. “The fact that it’s really grounded in my community, in my social network, in my neighbourhood is really appealing.”

In Good Dyke Porn, there’s no flimsy storyline, no cheesy soundtrack, just women of different body types and ethnicities having fervid sex — with the help of some toys and some lube, of course.

Trans men make an appearance as well, and Ryder even takes a turn in front of the camera.

“It’s sexy and it’s hot,” says Sharman. “It’s a way of making porn that’s really innovative, and it’s what I want to see.”

Ryder didn’t have a problem finding models to shoot, and there’s now a waiting list to appear in one of her films.

Her sex-positive attitude and dedication to real sex is what drew Amber Dawn, who has a commercial porn background, to appear in a few scenes.

“Bren’s wonderful,” Dawn says. “There was less acting and more authentic erotic experience. I still got nervous, I still got butterflies, but I could be more natural which was a relief.”

Dawn’s first scene involved group sex and the experience was not only completely positive, but something she would actually want to watch.

“The first time, I just thought it was hot,” she says. “I thought it was totally sexy. Queer women celebrating hot, nasty sex.”

Scenes aren’t scripted, though the participants meet with Ryder beforehand to discuss possibilities.

“I try to give them as much control over what they’re doing in the scene as possible. It’s in their home, they just tell me what they want to do and we do that,” Ryder says. “It’s not, ‘okay, put your hand up and open your mouth a little bit more.’ It’s all happening in real time. We want it to be sexy and I want it to come across on screen that they’re actually experiencing this sexy moment.”

“Porn is so underground still,” says Dawn. “You just don’t know how models were treated or what the working conditions were. With this, it’s guaranteed that everyone came out of it with a positive experience and it was done with integrity.”

Despite the intimacy of the scenes, nervousness melted away as soon as the camera clicked on, Ryder says.

“It’s amazing how comfortable we all become in that moment. The camera’s there, and it’s not a conventional situation. They’re nervous, I’m nervous, but once we get going it’s very comfortable. They don’t think of the camera being there, and it doesn’t seem unusual that they’re having sex in front of me.”

Ryder’s future plans for the website include downloadable videos, more community networking opportunities, and calls for submissions from other filmmakers that can be showcased on the site.

Because Ryder hopes that her site is only the beginning.

“I see myself as contributing to getting the ball rolling,” she says. “Somebody has to do it, somebody has to get out there and start to be more visible and proud about creating these scenes and images. With role models, with people starting the path ahead, I think there will be a lot more.”
