The L-Word comes to an end

TV series renewed for sixth and final season

Showtime has renewed the lesbian drama The L-Word for a sixth and final season, the network announced Mar 10.

“It has been a privilege to do this series and tell these stories and have these characters in my life and to share them with the show’s passionate fans,” says Ilene Chaiken, creator and executive producer of The L-Word.

Filmed in Vancouver, the show follows a group of Los Angeles-based friends.

Showtime’s president of entertainment hailed the show for moving “beyond the stereotypes of lesbian and gay characters”, but The L-Word drew some criticism in earlier seasons.

A 2004 review in Xtra West said the show lacked “authentic, believable” lesbians.

Still, the buzz around the show was overwhelmingly positive, as it was the first primetime series made by lesbians for lesbians to air in North America.

The final season is set to begin production this summer, with the series finale airing in 2009.
