The glitter is coming!

Gay rights activists in the US have found a new item in their fabulous and non-violent arsenal: glitter.

Yes. Glitter. Pretty, shiny, hell-to-remove glitter. A recent string of glitter-bomb attacks by gay activists against anti-gay Republican politicians seems to be picking up steam, with Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachman getting glittered on June 18 at her RightOnline conference. The kicker? The alleged “attacker” says she’d do the same thing to President Obama, whose “evolving” stance on gay marriage is still stranding thousands of gay couples in the US who lack the rights accorded to straight married couples.

Bachman was the third prominent Republican to be glittered this month, after Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty.

In another ironic turn, Bachman, who once said, “If you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair and personal enslavement,” used the Katy Perry gay anthem “Firework” as the theme song of the conference.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows on the glitter front, because it turns out that glittering someone can actually get you charged with assault, at least in Iowa, as a 24-year-old reveller at Iowa City Pride learned this weekend.
