Choice events in the city this week

Solidarity Vigil With LGBTQ in Egypt

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how good some of us have it in Canada. When images of a concert in Cairo were posted on social media in September showing someone dancing with the rainbow flag, the crackdown was on. Egyptian police claim the people they’ve arrested are homosexuals encouraging immoral acts. Many of those detained have already been sentenced to six years in prison. They are appealing their sentences and need all the support they can get. Take a stand tonight and demand Egyptian authorities protect their LGBT citizens.

6–7pm. Vancouver Public Library, 350 W Georgia St, at the corner of Georgia and Homer streets, outside the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board office. facebook.com/events/136447870418581

Queers, Questing and Testing

This may be the most fun you can have in Vancouver while getting STI/HIV testing done: in between rounds of Smash Bros or Mario Kart, take some time to get tested, and then go play some more. Feel free to bring your own Wii U controllers or 3DS, or any board games you’d like to share. Testing at Mpowerment is free and confidential, and will be first come, first served. It is also a chance to speak with the nurse and learn more about your sexual health.

6:30–9pm. Mpowerment Headquarters, 205–568 Seymour St. Free event. facebook.com/events/204311230108703

Up For Three Days

Well, I guess now we know how this man gets so much painting done. John Ferrie, one of the hottest artists in the city, is proud to bring you his new showing, Up For Three Days, featuring overhead visions of BC Ferries headed to the Gulf Islands and Victoria. Each painting expresses his signature humour.

6–9pm. Main Space Gallery, 350 E 2nd Ave. Show runs from today until Sunday, Oct 22. Info and weekend hours at facebook.com/events/590108761113019/ and at his website.

Girls Night Out 2017

Looking for a fun night out with your girlfriends? Enjoy a relaxing and hilarious night of comedy by women for women, featuring stand-up comedians Erica Sigurdson, Julie Kim, Robyn Edwards and Melanie Rose. Proceeds from Girls Night Out support arts and music programming and gallery initiatives at the Port Moody Arts Centre.

6:30–10pm. Inlet Theatre, 100 Newport Dr, Port Moody. Tickets $42.50 and more info at facebook.com/events/463837327318869.

Downtown Lesbian/Queer Dance Party

Spinning all your favourite top 40 remixes, ’90s throwbacks and house, Skylar Love and Krista are sure to get you moving on the dance floor. A party pal will be hanging out at XY for the majority of the night and will be fully trained to administer naloxone in case of a fentanyl overdose. They will also be available for interventions if you feel unsafe or are receiving unwanted attention.

10pm–3am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $12 at door or $10 advance at www.facebook.com/events/301619400317977.

Union LGBT+ Wedding Show

Planning a big fabulous wedding? Maybe try to outdo yours truly who took the sweetest guy in the world to the Rock of Gibraltar to get married in the room John and Yoko used — he’s British; it was a thing. The second annual Union Show showcases LGBT-friendly wedding professionals in an inclusive and fabulous environment with over 20 vendors and displays, from cake makers to planners. Come get some ideas, meet the pros and make your day super special. I hear there may even be a showdown between Two Guys with Bowties taking on 2 Guys with Knives.

12–5pm. Heritage Hall, 3102 Main St. $10 entrance fee. facebook.com/events/1515709491794943

Queer ASL Life Drawing

Join in for an evening of life drawing with two to three models holding poses from two to 30 minutes. Some paper and drawing tools will be available, but artists should bring their own materials and drawing surfaces. A clipboard, drawing board, piece of masonite or a hardcover book would all work well. Portable easels welcome as none are on site. Queer, Deaf, HoH and signing hearing allies all welcome.

6–8:30pm. Artech Building, 336 E 1st Ave. Event is free, but a donation of $5 compensates our models and covers additional supplies. facebook.com/events/150743542179928

Super Hero Halloween

Peach Cobblah, let’s not make the same mistake as last year: Mrs Doubtfire is not a superhero costume. Here is a chance to get out into the burbs and try out your costume early to see if it’s a hit before the glamour of the downtown gay elite. Prizes for best costumes, cocktails, queens and suburban boys in tight super hero attire — how can it not be fun?

7pm–1am. The Met Bar & Grill, 411 Columbia St, New Westminster. No entrance fee. facebook.com/events/2039662669596559

Coconutz & Bananas: Equinox

Vancouver’s first trans club night is gaining momentum. It is an inclusive, safe space for trans, non-binary and gender-bending folks to be visible, be themselves and not be judged. Enjoy performances, DJs and dancing till the wee hours. To make sure their events are as safe as can be, volunteers in pink or red T-shirts who are trained in first aid and naloxone will be circulating both inside and outside the event.

10pm—3am. Privé Nightclub, 750 Pacific Blvd. Tickets $12 at the door or $7 in advance at facebook.com/events/1681967841875166.

Onyx

If you’re looking for a good old fashioned dance night, a few bevvies and the chance to see Todd Hoye or Dan Bevan strip off those shirts — that alone is worth the admission — then look no further than Onyx. Onyx is an incredible group of rotating DJ talent playing vocal house and top 40 dance remixes alongside fierce drag performances that will leave you gagging. Tonight features DJ Dominic and Karmella Barr. You may even see a glimpse of the elusive Berlin.

10pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Cover $5. facebook.com/events/1474965349262681

Sunday, Oct 22

Queers, Beers & Cider

Finally, a good cider afternoon bash. Craft beers are great, but for me the afternoon means cider, or else I need a snooze midway through. This event has everything you need for a full Sunday afternoon: ciders ranging from sweet and fruity to crisp and dry, some of the best craft beers around, pinball, video games, a parking-lot patio, food trucks, chill vibes and vintage tunes spinning. Maybe now I’ll still be awake for the amateur-hour party following.

5–10pm. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. Cover $7–$15 at the door. facebook.com/events/120096172026469

Amateur Hour: Fall Edition

Pack it, strap it, tape it, tuck it, bind it, boost it, paint it on and then take it all off (or don’t!). This event is calling all kings, queens, things, humans, creatures, gender breakers and celebrators to get their bits wet in the wonderful world of DIY queer performance art. Performances by Gender Spice, Ryan Goshling, Enyaaaah and more — maybe even you. For more info or to get on the bill, email manupdrag@gmail.com.

10pm–1am. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. Cover $7 or free with a stamp from Queers & Beers. facebook.com/events/1563413470348148

Drag Me to Hell

This sounds like a sleepover date with Carlotta Gurl — and yes, of course she’s in this show. If you are ready to start your Halloween partying early, this is a drag show you are not going to want to miss, featuring Miss Understood, Nadia Business and the horny devil herself Carlotta Gurl. This show is guaranteed to heat up your night and get those naughty bits tingling — in a good way, not like the day after Conni Smudge’s slumber party.

10:30pm–3am. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. Cover $5. facebook.com/events/1795109400529358

QueerProv: Challenge the Allies

Who does it the funniest, the queers or the allies? I’m talking comedy improv people, as a brand new format to grace the QueerProv late night stage. Four QueerProvers take on an ally team and go head-to-head to win kooky prizes, the coveted QP Tiara and bragging rights. Come for the show and stay for this fun format.

8pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. No cover. facebook.com/events/113114519360019

Moist Mondays

Something about the word moist just seems so much sexier than wet, drenched or, my personal favourite, damp. See for yourself as Misty Meadows brings Moist to life with a rotating theme and guests. And, of course, heartthrob Nick Bertossi will be spinning to get you into whatever degree of dampness you like — usually he exudes drenched.

11:15pm–3am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Cover $5. facebook.com/events/1735918710044122/

Tuesday, Oct 24

Boys Night Out

Hmmm, the last time I had chicken was KFC, but I can’t say it was young. Steamworks brings you a better kind of chicken, complete with a basket every Tuesday at Boyz Night. Guys under 25 get a free eight-hour locker. No wonder, because only guys under 25 can stay hard for eight hours — ah, remember those days Syd? Tonight brings a whole new meaning to finger lickin’ good.

4pm–4am. Steamworks Baths, 123 W Pender St. Memberships $6, regular rates start at $15 for lockers and rooms. steamworksbaths.com/event/boyz-night

Wednesday, Oct 25

Games Night for Out In Schools

What better excuse for a games night for adults than to fundraise for Out In Schools, the educational arm of Vancouver’s queer film fest that brings LGBT films to kids in schools to facilitate discussions. Bring your games! Bring your friends! Get ready to socialize!

6–9pm. The Terminal Pub, 115 12th St, New Westminster. Suggested donation $5–$10. meetup.com/GaysandGamesNW/events/243079020/

XY Bingo for Life

It may have been re-launched at a new club, but it still has all your favourite players, trashy drag queen hostesses, Del Stamp on deck and fabulous prizes. Just like before, all proceeds from bingo will go to the Vancouver Friends For Life Society, which provides vital services to people living with HIV and other illnesses.

7:30pm. XYYXR, 1216 Bute St. Entrance by suggested donation that includes bingo cards. facebook.com/events/120557771996567
