Out in Vancouver: June 9-15, 2016

Choice events in the city this week

Thursday, June 9

Queer ASL Social

I have always wanted to learn another language but after destroying the French and Spanish language with my pronunciation, this may be the way to go. Meet other queer and trans American Sign Language speakers and practice conversation in a laidback social space. This is a place for all levels including beginners.

6pm. Heartwood Community Café, 317 East Broadway St. Free. heartwoodcc.ca/community-events-calendar.html

Friday, June 10

Road Trip

I love the Men’s Chorus but I am just too ADD to sit in the same spot for more than 30 minutes, unless someone is naked — although that might be a good suggestion for the next concert. Road Trip is the Chorus’s jumpstart to summer as they sing and dance to classic car tunes and songs of the open road. A six-night stand is on tap: Today, Saturday, Sunday and resuming Thursday, Friday, Saturday (June 16, 17 and 18).

8pm. Performance Works, Granville Island, 1218 Cartwright St. General admission $37 at vancouvermenschorus.ca

Cirque Sensuel

If this was the other Cirque, I could see ringmaster Del Stamp juggling balls, but this is Cirque Sensuel so more like cock-ring master Del balancing a full can of Red Bull on his ample appendage. Amazing what a few well- delivered tequilas will accomplish. Tonight is a dance-party sensation featuring circus performances, entertainers and all the hits you can dance to. Run away and join the circus for the night. I’ll be the clown with the large red ball.

9pm–3am. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. $10 at door but $7 if in appropriate dress (carnival, steampunk or fetish). facebook.com/events/1155247754497518/

Wild Fruit

Pheromones go wild on Davie Street tonight. Wild Fruit is becoming one of the hottest women’s nights in town. Dance to everything from old school to present and back again. But let’s face it, not everybody goes for the music. Go for the eye candy here and you will not be disappointed maybe even find your soul mate over a Blue Dragon or highball.

10pm–3am. Playhouse Nightclub, 1240 Thurlow St. Tickets $10 at Little Sister’s, 1238 Davie St and at flygirlproductions.com.

Wet & Wild

With the women taken care of down the street, now it’s time for the men. Wet & Wild has become the premier place to go to see hot, naked men shower like nobody is watching (if you know what I mean). Steamworks and Pumpjack have partnered to bring your wet dreams to life. Tonight DJ Nick Bertossi rolls out the rhythm and I have it on good authority that with enough liquid encouragement, Nick might just take a turn in the shower himself. His, let’s say, “abilities” puts the others to shame, so first tequila is on me.

10pm. Pumpjack Pub, 1167 Davie St. Cover $5 after 9pm. pumpjackpub.com

Hustla Iz Back

Can you ever get enough Peach Cobblah? Not the dessert, the drag queen. Although I am sure both get eaten just as much. Peach is bringing Hustla: Homo Hip Hop back to the masses. Joining Ms Cobblah will be DJs Jef Leppard and Rose with performances by Teayajna, Shay Dior and Flygirl. And yes, the make-out corner is back.

10:30pm–2am. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. Cover $9 at door. facebook.com/events/263397220675929/

Saturday, June 11

Strut

Can you picture me in a six-inch pair of heels? I’d be 7’2” and hit every doorframe in the city, so this is one fundraiser I won’t sashay into but I support those who do. Strut is a one-mile walk-a-thon that raises funds for the Foundation of Hope’s effort to assist charities that support LGBT refugees and newcomers who have left homes where homosexuality is still a criminal offense. Gather in heels, stilettos, platforms, glass slippers and more. Think fun, think high, think wild. If you can’t make it, please go to the website and support one of the walkers.

11am–2pm. Sunset Beach, 1204 Beach Ave. Register or support a walker at strutvancouver.ca

Red Umbrella March

If I had been born 40 years later, I’d probably be a sex worker in my prime right now. Although I have been told that Daddy sex workers have a calling as well, so maybe there is still time. That can be my retirement plan. Today sex workers, family, friends and allies stand together in their fight against Canada’s prostitution laws. Dress up, wear red and bring a red umbrella to stand out, be loud, proud and beautiful. The march will end at Crab Park where refreshments will be served.

2:30pm. Vancouver Art Gallery, 750 Hornby St. facebook.com/events/795415357258951/

Vancouver Dungeon Party

Dungeon parties are a good stress relief for me because they are always at the end of a hell of a work week. What better way to release tension than by flogging someone and picturing one of your many bosses as the person tied up in front of you? Sometimes it is better than sex. Tonight Metro Vancouver Kink brings you a night full of fun, socializing and hot scenes. If you are new to the experience, a greeter will be on hand if you want to ask questions, be accompanied as you observe the space, or have a chat until you feel comfortable. All experience levels are welcome. An open photo space is available from 5:30pm–7:30pm, by donation.

8pm–1am. Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph St. Tickets $20 at Little Sister’s, 1238 Davie St or at door.

Sin City: Wild Kingdom Fetish Ball

Jungle wear: the perfect theme for a fetish party. I can dress up as a hairy chimp and throw shit at all the people that piss me off. Just one of those butt plug tails might be uncomfortable. Animal print, fangs, fur, claws are all highly encouraged. Prizes for best wild kingdom fetish outfits. Dance cages, dungeon play space, play stations for spontaneous kink and much more, including kinky stage performances.

9pm–3am. The Imperial, 319 Main St. Tickets $17 at ticketzone.com or sincityfetishnight.com/

Queer Fam Jam

Lick, the legendary ladies night, is back with special guests DJs Bey and Manybothans. Ponyboy, Jessy Styles, Chloe and host Brigee-K will be in da house. Have fun in a multi-level area complete with pool tables, arcade games, dance floor and a special darkened lounge to really get acquainted.

10pm–3am. The Hindenburg, 23 West Cordova St. Cover $10 at door. facebook.com/events/1080392305366637/

Sunday, June 12

Italian Day: Mangiamo (Let’s eat)

I love me some Italian: pizza, pasta, wine, sweaty Tony the mechanic. This year marks the seventh Italian Day on the Drive. Closed to traffic, the street will be awash with lesbians, gays, soccer players, straights, and the curious, all stretched out for 13 blocks. The street comes alive with music, games, vendors, patios, street performers and food — lots of delicious Italian food. Make a day of it.

12pm–8pm. Commercial Dr. italianday.ca

Monday, June 13

Queer Prov: Risky Business

If you are in the need of a good laugh and my column just isn’t doing it for you then this night is what you need. The actors never know what they are getting into but they always end up being hilarious. Some of the funniest people in town are in rotation weekly so each night is a new experience. Tonight a potential new sponsor will be in attendance so expect a show with more than a few surprises.

Doors 6pm, show 8–10pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. No cover. facebook.com/events/143231482755324/

Tuesday, June 14

Jax 2.0

Who says fun is a weekend-only sport? Get home after that workday, shower, head to a club, drop your gear, sit back, grab a handful of dick and stroke with 20 of your best new friends. If you have something better, please let me know. Vancouver Jax 2.0 rolls out a new schedule with the second and fourth Tuesday of the month assigned to a bit of man meat release. You are going to do it anyway, so why not show it off?

7pm–10pm. Club 8×6, 1775 Haro St. Cover $10, $5 students. Clothes check-in $2. vancouverjax.com/

Wednesday, June 15
