Out in Vancouver: Halloween edition 2017

Spooky and sexy events in the city this week

Thursday, Oct 26

Rainbow Karaoke

What a great idea for a fun night out in the ’burbs, at a pub right on the water. Yes, it is the Fraser River, but in the dark you can pretend it’s the Adriatic. Meet members of the local community and their allies and have a great night of karaoke. It doesn’t matter what you sound like because none of them know you.

6:30–11:30pm. Paddlewheeler Pub, 810 Quayside Dr, New Westminster Quay. Free entry. facebook.com/events/121813238528410

Story Story Lie

This is one of the most inventive nights around, an interactive laughter-filled show with one simple premise: Darcy Michael, Shirley Gnomes and others share intimate, hilarious and often embarrassing stories that seem too strange to be true. The catch? Someone’s lying. The audience takes part in an interrogation to reveal who it is. The first audience member to correctly guess the liar wins the grand prize, as well as the respect and admiration of their peers.

7–9pm. The Rio, 1660 E Broadway St. $10 advance tickets on Facebook, $12 at the door. facebook.com/events/366155567137390

Dungeon Drag 101

Most drag nights can be scary enough: have you ever seen Conni Smudge in drag doing the morning-after walk of shame or Robyn Graves hung over? But tonight is horror drag, and though it’s hard to believe, Carlotta Gurl is in charge. Join her, Misty and Kitty for enough glitter to gag an elephant. Grab your wigs and strut down to The Pit for a Halloween-themed show with some Rocky Horror, Little Shop of Horrors, and all-around scariness.

9pm–1am. The Pit Pub at the Nest, 6133 University Blvd, UBC Campus. Cover $2. facebook.com/events/1877562385895688

Friday, Oct 27

Wayne Manor

If I had an Alfred costume I would go to this party. Imagine a century-old Vancouver mansion, complete with a sinister history, done up like a DC comic icon’s lair. This is billed as a fully immersive experience, in which audience members arrive at the Gotham City police masquerade ball, and explore stately Wayne Manor where every alcove, corner and corridor has been transformed and clues await. After the conclusion, a night of dancing in the ballroom.

7pm–1am. Brock House Restaurant, 3875 Point Grey Rd. Tickets $150, and info at facebook.com/events/113506285961942.

Boobs and Boos Party

Free those nipples and liberate those boobs at this women’s only Halloween costume party. Scary or sexy, be who you want to be at this boobalicious evening full of dancing, mingling, door prizes and fun.

7:30pm–12am. Wilde Oscar’s Pub, 45886 Wellington Ave, Chilliwack. Tickets available on Facebook or Wilde Oscar’s Pub. facebook.com/events/374453826305235

Man Up: Superstitions

This is billed as the wildest, weirdest, queer and fearless show of the year. If you’ve broken a drag king’s mirror, rolled snake eyes on a dyke’s dice or crossed a thousand black cats’ paths on a full moon, come enjoy these deadly performances and a costume contest.

9pm–2am. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. $20 at door. facebook.com/events/1228399733973429

XY Halloween

To get ready for the start of XY Halloween weekend, you are going to need multiple costumes. Tonight, Partyfun is back for another legendary party. The best costume will win a double transport ticket to Whistler, but costumes are optional. At 1am there will be a group cheer for Love is Love, to remember what really matters in life.

9:30pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. $10 cover. facebook.com/partyfunvan/

Disco Inferno

Looking to make an easy $1,000? Then get out your best authentic disco duds and get with the vintage dance music at this tribute to disco glamour from the ’70s to ’90s. This place promises to be transformed into a ghoulish haunted prom with spooky décor and frights around every corner. The best dressed may be blessed with the big cash prize for the best Halloween and disco get-ups, plus you get to meet Shanda Leer.

10:30pm–2am. The Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main St. $20 at the door. facebook.com/events/1940466119551493

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Though you can probably watch this film anytime on Netflix, nothing quite compares to seeing it over Halloween at the theatre. People sing, scream, dance and hit you in the head with toast at the drop of a dime. The original is a classic — sorry Laverne Cox — so grab your partner and have the most fun you can have in a theatre with your clothes on. On four nights this weekend.

Friday and Saturday 11:30pm, Sunday 10pm, Tuesday, Oct 31 11:45pm. The Rio, 1660 E Broadway. Tickets $15 advance at riotheatre.ca or $18 at the door. facebook.com/events/689535687912671

Saturday, Oct 28

Out On Screen Annual Gala

Kick off your Halloween weekend with a fabulous cocktail party, costumes and an art auction in support of Out in Schools and the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Their 15th annual fall gala will be hosted by Sienna Blaze and Carl Meadows, and joined by this year’s Mr/Ms Cobalt winner Karmella Barr, runner-up Maiden China, and 2015 Mr/Ms Cobalt Rose Butch. Proceeds help the Out in Schools team travel around the province bringing LGBT films and discussions to schools.

6:30–10:30pm. Goldcorp Stage at BMO Theatre Centre, 162 W 1st Ave. Tickets $25–$45 and info at Eventbrite.

Fear As Funk VI

Don’t let the name fool you; it’s still Queer As Funk but with an early show so you’ve time to make it to another Halloween party and get your money’s worth out of that costume. Don’t miss this tight soul band’s fourth annual Halloween party.

7–9:15pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $22 in advance at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door if available. facebook.com/events/113667442665109

Parade Of Lost Souls: Altar Ego

This parade and festival is for all the lost souls of the world, a ceremony of reflection and renewal for all. Wear a costume, bring an instrument, make a dance. This year’s parade invites you to alter your ego, change who you are, and grab your destiny. Contact Kat Single-Dain, artistic director, to get involved in performance, volunteering or production at katsingledain@gmail.com.

7–10pm. Outdoors next to Britannia Community Centre, 1661 Napier St. The starting location of this year’s parade will be revealed at midnight at dustyflowerpotcabaret.com. After the parade, the party continues at the Lost Souls After-Party, The Legion, 2205 Commercial Dr. facebook.com/dustyflowerpotcabaret/

Women’s Halloween Dance

Sometimes I meet an event organizer with such presence and energy that I can’t list the event without thinking of them. For me that person is the late Susan Yeager, who originally coined the phrase Duelling DJs for her dances. The tradition continues with this year’s Halloween dance; I know Susan is there somewhere toasting everyone at the party. Have a good night, ladies.

7:30pm–12am. Croatian Cultural Centre, 3520 Commercial Dr. Tickets $20 in advance at dueling-djs.com/index.html.

As Old As Time: A Twisted Tale

If you thought this was Myria LeNoir’s birthday party, you were half right. It’s a Disney-themed Halloween party and the old doll herself is starring along with some fantastic friends for an evening of performances that promise to thrill and amaze.

8pm–12am. Wilde Oscar’s, 45886 Wellington Ave, Chilliwack. Tickets $15 at Wilde Oscar’s or $20 at the door. facebook.com/wildeoscarspub

Angels & Demons

I’m sure Del Stamp covers the demon part, but who could be an angel at Vancouver’s only Halloween party geared toward the beards, the hair, the fur, the beef, and those who love them? Go-gos Stephen Sadowski, Tim Wesseling, Nicholas Apostolou and of course the studly, angelic, muscle stud Daniel Stilla will be shaking what god gave them — hopefully right in my face. Costume prize $200. Let the angels guide you or the demons take you.

8pm–4am. Pumpjack Pub, 1167 Davie St. Cover $8. facebook.com/events/1964330353837121

CarnEVIL

Don’t be afraid, that creaking you hear is just Carlotta’s knees as the old doll makes her way into the CarnEVIL Big Top — which is a stretch as we usually find her under a big top. The creepy carnies are back and Absolut’ly Dragulous dares you to enter as the big C and special ghoulish guests try to scare the pants off you. $200 prize for best costume, so get busy and start sewing.

8:30pm. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. Cover $15 at the door. facebook.com/events/1982387918710246

Backdoor Halloween

Yes, that little back door of perfection Matt Troy is back just in time for All Hallow’s Eve. The party that went too far is back, and now more carnal than ever, he promises. Boys and ghouls, daddies and grannies, twinks, tricks and treats, leave your labels behind and enter through the back door. With Honcho, Diana Boss, Zarafan and more.

9pm–3am. Vancouver Art & Leisure, 494 Railway St. Tickets $50 at leisure.events/backdoor-halloween-17. Info at facebook.com/events/124221461618273.

Bratpack Massacre

If there is a drag queen who doesn’t work over Halloween then she must be ready for the old queens’ home. I hear that’s over at 1150 Burnaby St — is there still room, Robyn? Vancouver’s favourite girl group Bratpack brings an ultra sexy murder mystery-themed party. Think you can figure out which one of these killer queens is the deadliest of all? Killer DJ Nick Bertossi along with Jane Smoker, Kendall Gender and more head up the night.

10pm–3am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $25–$30 at Eventbrite. Info at facebook.com/events/1465295290172754.

Man Up: Unholy

Man Up brings you a wicked queer dance party in a judgement-free environment.

10pm–3am. The Hindenburg, 23 W Cordova St. Tickets $10–$25 at facebook.com/manupvancouver.

Ghoul’s Night Out

These ghouls party like no other — Flyghouls that is. Visuals, decor and DJ Miss M spinning your favourite ’80s, ’90s and 2000s dance and hip-hop to get every last person (dead or alive) on the dance floor. Costumes encouraged but not mandatory; organizers encourage you to just be who you want to be.

10pm–3am. Prive Nightclub, 750 Pacific Blvd. Tickets $10–$15 at Flygirl Productions.

Sunday, Oct 29

Susan Cottrell

Come hear this author and spiritual director, who champions the LGBT community and challenges Christians who reject them, share her thoughts on love.

6pm. The Renaissance Church, 409 E Broadway. Free entry. facebook.com/RenaissanceChurchVancouver

Haunted Hallow’s Eve

The Bratpack never takes a break! See them again and help out a great cause at the same time at a fundraiser benefit for the Huntington’s Society of Canada. Featuring the amazing Jane Smoker, Gia Metric, Kendall Gender, Synthia Kiss and Thanks Jem.

7pm–3am. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. Advance tickets $15 at facebook.com/events/1862647547382107.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

Only if I run into these babes in the dark. Peach Cobblah, Valynne Vile and the insane Misty Meadows are going to show you what goes bump in the night — a small bump probably if Peach is first. Is there a monster under your bed? How about that irrational dread when all the lights are off? Perhaps there is some ancient dark force that has invasively forced its way into your body… well they have a show (and perhaps a Catholic priest for that last one) for you. Probably Kitsilano’s only gay Halloween show, so don’t miss out as a plethora of queens join the party.

8pm–12am. Displace Hashery, 3293 W 4th Ave, Kitsilano. $10 at the door. facebook.com/events/735643126632616

Monday, Oct 30

Dick Safari Hallowpeen

It just wouldn’t be Halloween without the King of Dicks, Del Stamp, and his partner in grime, Alma B Itches, searching the city and back alleys to find you the best amateur cock for strip night. Don’t worry, I personally know that Alma has polished every knob clean. If you are reading this, are you courageous enough to bare it all or just be a lookie loo? Cash prizes for first and second place; runner up gets Alma.

11pm. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. Cover $5. junctionpub.com/events/dck-safari-2017-10-30/

Tuesday, Oct 31

Celeb’s Halloween

Every year this place outdoes itself for Halloween, and with it being Tuesday animal night, this year will be even bigger. Even Casper may make an appearance, so get spooky and enjoy. Presented by Blueprint Events and Celebrities Nightclub with DJs Johnny Jover, My! Gay! Husband! and JP Valdes.

10pm–3am. Celebrities, 1022 Davie St. facebook.com/events/911530292328212

Blender Nightmare: A Shame Spiral Halloween

I’m really surprised Peach Cobblah has not fallen face first into the blender some nights — that girl can be top heavy at times. The baddest bitch was away doing her writing thing all month, is what she says, but I know she has been trolling the young boys out at UBC monthly. Fortunately, she’s back holding the reins of her morbid little sweaty show, and couldn’t be happier than to be reunited with her spooky sister from a sinister mister, Valynne. One blender, two queens, too many shots, and a terrifying experience for all.

10pm–3am. 1181, 1181 Davie St. No cover. facebook.com/events/358943827852267

Wednesday, Nov 1

Bear Hump

If you’ve had enough of scary costumes, drag queens up the yin yang and enough disco music to last a lifetime, join me here. No costumes, no clothes — hell, most of the time no towels; just a lot of sexy, hairy muscle men and cubs. Have a soak, relax, have a massage and be happy New Year’s Eve is eight weeks away and it all starts again. Sorry.

3–9pm. Steamworks Baths, 123 W Pender St. Rates start at $15. steamworksbaths.com/vancouver/events/
