Out in Vancouver: Dec 7–13, 2017

Choice events in the city this week

Thursday, Dec 7

Mrs Smith’s Scottish Christmas Extravaganza

She may look like the love child of Peach Cobblah and Robyn Graves — I’m guessing Robyn carried her, have you seen those birthing hips? — but it’s really Jamie Smith, the man with 17 voices, who brings Mrs Smith to life with her Scottish wit and wisdom. Add in some musical numbers, drag performances and, of course, prizes, and the house should be full. A portion of the proceeds of this show will go to Out In Schools

8pm tonight, and Friday. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $20 at jamiesmithactor.com/tickets.html.

Friday, Dec 8

French director Robin Campillo offers a stirring and candid view of the AIDS activist group ACT UP as it took shape in 1990s Paris and tried to shake the masses out of complacency.

6pm. Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour St. Tickets $13 online and at the box office. viff.org/Online/default.asp

The Tantalus Teasers

Drag queens and Squamish don’t sound like they would necessarily be a match, aside from Carlotta’s nude Sasquatch hunt, but this group is going to prove it is. A one-night drag extravaganza with all proceeds going to Safe N’ Sound Squamish. See more than the sky.

8pm. Quest University Canada, 3200 University Blvd, Squamish. Entrance by donation. questu.ca/events-calendar/tantalus-teasers-see-sky/

Saturday, Dec 9

Tom Of Finland

So, all the erotic artwork we masturbated to is now a movie . . . Awkward. I bet the movie theatre will be filled with boners, like a Pavlov’s dog experiment. Artist Touko Laaksonen, known to the world as Tom of Finland, shaped the fantasies of a generation of gay men, but who was he in real life? Director Dome Karukoski follows Laaksonen’s life from WWII to 1950s Finland to 1970s California, where he and his art were finally embraced.

4pm today. 8:35pm Sunday, 6:30pm Monday and Thursday. Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour St. Tickets $13 at viff.org or at the box office. facebook.com/events/158939844840184

Tucked And Plucked: Zee Zee Theatre

Also known as Waxing Peach Cobblah: The untouched story. Expect a cross between The Rosie O’Donnell Show and Jerry Springer as Isolde N Barron and Peach Cobblah co-host a glamorous and outrageous talk show with some of Vancouver’s most influential queens. Think Myria LeNoir, Imelda Mae Santos and Kendall Gender, if I may name drop.

7–10pm. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Tickets $25 at Eventbrite. More info at facebook.com/events/1968358003191165.

Winter Solstice

Coconutz and Bananas, Vancouver’s only publicly running trans club night owned and operated by trans people, presents a winter solstice night in a safe space to “celebrate our journeys, our bodies and each other.” Everyone is welcome, organizers say: as long as you know you are in a trans space, you’re more than welcome to come with an open mind and a desire to learn.

9pm. Prive Nightclub, 750 Pacific Blvd. Cover $7. facebook.com/events/355433988260920/

Sunday, Dec 10

Come Together

No matter in what context you say those two words, they sound dirty — fabulously dirty. Even better, it’s coming from the mind of Matt Troy, the promoter who looks tastier than a hot cinnamon bun and probably just as sticky. Organizers promise an afternoon of holiday cheer to celebrate our community and help others, with a market and workshops to raise money for the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.

1–6pm. Vancouver Art & Leisure, 494 Railway St. Admission $10. facebook.com/events/130072884333031/

Coco Holiday Show

The Fountainhead Pub is proud to host the 17th year of CoCo’s annual holiday show. One of the best fundraisers in the city: a night of drag, drinks, and most importantly, donating to some great charities with Coco and her guests. This year’s show will benefit A Loving Spoonful, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and Out in Schools. Seating is limited so arrive early.

7–11pm. Fountainhead Pub, 1025 Davie St. No cover but non-perishable food items gratefully accepted for the donation baskets. facebook.com/events/128665667902881

Monday, Dec 11

Quick, grab my lightsaber — it always throbs like that, but the light is out. In anticipation of the release of the next Star Wars movie, the queer improv team presents the resurgence of QueerWars.
