It’s been nearly nine months since Jinkx Monsoon sashayed away with the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar, and we gays are extremely thirsty for a new set of queens and their GIFs to surface on social media. Season 6 of RuPaul’s school for girls looks juicy, drama-filled and very heavy on milk puns.
Just in time for the season premiere of Drag Race (what might as well also be called Courtney Act’s drag master class!), OUTtv has launched The Glamazon Project on Tumblr. The blog features drag kings and queens from our home and native land and beyond submitting before-and-after drag photos. They are also encouraged to speak about their drag experiences, inspirations and beauty tips, as well as focusing on what drag means to them personally.
Drag for the average viewer often means tight lip-syncs, shade being thrown and fish being served, but The Glamazon Project gives readers an opportunity to see what motivates these performers and artists beyond face, body and one-liners. It also gives us a chance to open the library, put on our reading glasses and read the submissions. Some of the drag names will leave you gagging — and not in a good way. And we won’t even talk about how some of the girls paint their faces. They are full-on Monets: from far away it’s okay, but up close, it’s a big old mess.
All reading aside, upon visiting the Tumblr page, you’ll see a queen for all seasons. Drag kings, gender queers, fresh-out-of-drag-mother’s wombs, headliners, performance artists, Halloween clowns, house mothers and a girl group called Queens of the Orient, are all on display. If you have a chance to delve into their drag-spirations and motivations, you’ll find heartwarming stories of survival, fascinating alter egos, inspiring artistic outlets and beautiful tales of self-expression. You’ll also find people who have simply submitted as their motivation “One in the pink, one in the stink!”
The Glamazon Project chooses the best photos to appear on the Tumblr page and then the chance to be shown on OUTtv, and since there hasn’t been a Canadian contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race yet, it’s all about baby drag steps. If you’re a drag artist, make sure you submit to the project. If you are a drag lover, make sure to take a look at some of Canada’s fiercest, bravest and most beautiful artists.
