The gays are taking over TV! We have Ryan Murphy’s creations, an out Anderson Cooper, and, of course, Ellen DeGeneres is ruling daytime with The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which is on its 10th season.
Now Ellen’s production company, A Very Good Production, has gotten the green light for two new shows: The Smart One, which will air on ABC and star Ellen’s wife, Portia de Rossi, and an untitled show picked up by NBC about a “successful and independent 32-year-old woman who, convinced she is certain to die alone, seeks the advice of those around her to reassure her that living as a singleton was the right choice.”
The concept is kind of banal, and if the woman is a lesbian it’s basically the continuation of Ellen’s ’90s sitcom — but that might not be such a bad thing. Times are different, and I feel that a lot of the ideas that the public wasn’t open to seeing explored on Ellen would strike a more successful chord with today’s viewers.
In the meantime, if you’re looking for a gay show with style (it’s being compared to HBO’s Girls), I recommend you check out The Outs. It’s a web series by Adam Goldman and offers an honest and humorous look at contemporary gay life in New York City.
Here’s the first episode:
