Batwoman proposes to girlfriend in DC Comics first

After DC Comics came under fire for hiring science-fiction writer turned ironically antiquated bigot Orson Scott Card, it seems they’re going to balance out that mistake rather nicely.

In the recently released Batwoman #17, the titular hero (also known as Kate Kane) proposed to her girlfriend, Maggie Sawyer, marking the first time a lesbian proposal has occurred in a mainstream comic. Excelsior! (Oh, wait, that’s Stan Lee’s line. Shit . . . )

Followers of Batwoman artist J.H. Williams III were treated to a hint viaTwitter before the issue’s release that an important chapter in the life of DC’s leading lesbian lady would be going down this week. He also expressed why the character has come to mean so much to him and fans alike on his personal website on Tuesday. “Batwoman is an important character, and a socially important one that has meaning that extends well beyond the printed pages of the world she lives in, reaching out into ours possibly affecting those who encounter her story.” [SOURCE]

On one hand, fantastic that we’ve finally come to a point where a mainstream superhero is not only an open lesbian, but also able to propose to her girlfriend. That’s pretty cool. On the other hand, we’re dealing with the DC Universe here, which means this could very easily go south reeeeeeeeeal fast. I mean shit, look what happened to Barbara Gordon: one minute she’s kicking ass as Batgirl, then all of a sudden the Joker shoots her right through the spine. To be fair, she became The Oracle after that, and The Oracle was way more badass than Batgirl . . . What I’m trying to say is, the DC Universe is a really chaotic, painful place, and anyone could die at any minute for no reason whatsoever. Just like real life! (Christ, that went dark.)
