Queer Film Festival
Did you know that this festival has been around longer than most of you have been alive — 28 years and going stronger than ever? Just the history of their survival would be a show in itself. Festival runs from tonight until Sunday, Aug 21. Tonight’s opening gala party, Starlight Soiree, is the place to mingle, discuss the menu of films or make plans to meet for a screening.
Tickets $12 for a single show, $8 seniors and students. Full festival pass $165 and $140 for seniors and students. Tickets available online, at Little Sister’s, 1238 Davie St, and at Black Dog Video, 1470 Commercial Dr. For full program listings, times, and venues, visit queerfilmfestival.ca

Sneaky Surprise Hustla: Bi Now, Gay Later
That Peach Cobblah is a crafty old broad. She got me all hyped up over Pride and just when I thought I’d have some time to recover, she throws a surprise into the works. A mid-month hip hop night with DJs Trevor Risk and B-Rad (this is where the bi comes in) but the gay DJs will be back next month, so gay later. Best of all this is a free edition — and you still get Peach as your host.
9pm. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. No cover. facebook.com/events/655779921244156/
Full Length Feature Fridays
He may be ginger, he may be shorter, but Gingerbear Todd is the feistiest DJ/VJ on the village circuit. Tonight he brings the ultimate visual experience to the dance floor. Think of the best ass-bumping remixes you have heard matched up with music videos on every screen all put together by the energizer bear himself. Bonus: Eva Scarlett performs live with sexy go-go boys.
9pm–12am. Odyssey, 686 W Hastings St. Register on the guest list at theodyssey.ca to get in with no cover, otherwise $5 at door.
DILF
I used to think that these were the best four words in the English language because I thought I was the right age to be a dad. My good friend Syd pointed out in a drunken moment that my age is more granddad. Somehow GDILF just doesn’t have the same groin-tingling effect. Hopefully the lights are down low and the guys are particularly hungry. This is a night for men over 35 and the men who want them. Zarafan will be in the deejay’s booth.
10pm–4am. Steamworks Baths, 123 West Pender St. Rates start at $17. steamworksbaths.com

Columbia Street Party
I have to admit this was one fun event last year. It’s a New Westminster Pride street party that takes over Columbia Street which will be cordoned off like Davie Street was not so long ago. The difference is it’s a scaled-down version where you can walk around without being pushed aside. Even better, there are five beer gardens along the route that take cash and cards — who knew? A children’s area is part of the mix, plus a puppet show, a drag stage, vendors, food trucks — did I mention five beer gardens? Miz Adrien, Kimmortal, and Rainbow Concert Band are among the many on hand to entertain you. You’ll find me at all five beer gardens.
3–8pm. Columbia St at 8th St. No entrance fee. More info at facebook.com/events/1730628230541226/
West End Community Yard Sale
I’m not saying this is where most drag queens get their wardrobe but I have seen Selma Bush buying granny panties and Carlotta Gurl loaded down with bags bigger than her usual Friday liquor order. Come create a wardrobe of your own. There are antiques, toys, collectibles, furniture and so much more to wade through.
10am–4pm. Lord Roberts Elementary School, 1100 Bidwell St. Entry by donation with proceeds supporting The Attic Thrift Store. facebook.com/events/138252539932239/
DILF Jock/Underwear Party
All these parties and Father’s Day is long gone. One of Seattle’s best parties comes to Vancouver and it is the start a Canadian tour. I can’t wait to hear how DILF goes over in Newfoundland. A hot night full of hot sounds, hot men and a lot of dark corners to check out what’s filling those briefs.
9pm–2am. The Hindenburg, 23 W Cordova St. Advance tickets $10 at eventbrite.com and there may be more at the door if you’re lucky.
Bawdyhaus
Vancouver’s edition was cancelled but you can still experience it if you follow our boys to Seattle to show how Canadian men play. The strange part isn’t that DJs Gingerbear Todd and Del Stamp are being allowed across the border, it’s the fact they are being let across together. Have they not read Stamp’s FB page? You can fit a suitcase of contraband in his anal cavity to smuggle stuff back. Todd’s, however, can only hold a bottle of poppers. I know many of you are going and I’m still debating, so if you see me around, convince me. Please.
8pm–3am. Seattle Eagle, 314 East Pike St, Seattle. Cover $8 at 8pm, $10 after 10pm. seattle.gaycities.com

Queer Families Picnic
The only difference for me between a straight picnic and a gay one is I don’t have to eat my mom’s awful — but according to her, famous — mustard, bread pickle and anchovy potato salad. Not the good mustard but the yellow stuff that glowed and attracted cats. Bring whoever is family to you, pack a big basket and enjoy. It will be waterpark fun, and they are supplying free watermelon.
4:30pm. Grassy field behind False Creek Community Centre, 1318 Cartwright St, Granville Island. Free family event. queerfilmfestival.ca/event-listings/#event-6106
Brooke Of Morman
Living in a condo you don’t get the Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses coming to your door, which is a shame. I feel like I am missing out. I once saw a porno where they rang the bell and the guy answering the door dropped his towel and there ensued hours of deflowering. I always wanted to try that but the only person who comes to my door is a very portly, and always sweaty, FedEx driver. Maybe I’ll get lucky at The Brooke of Morman, which is hosted by Ms Gay Vancouver Brooke Davis, and is one of the village’s liveliest fundraising nights.
10pm. Showtime midnight. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. Suggested $3 donation. junctionpub.com/events/brooke-of-morman-5/

Condom Packing
I am sure that all of the gays in the village, including me, used their fair share of free condoms and lube supplied by HIM over Pride. As with everything in life there is a cost and now it is payback time. Their supplies of condom and lube packs were greatly diminished, so guys, tonight you can redeem yourselves and help fill new packs and beef up the arsenal. Meet other great volunteers and enjoy a nice meal afterwards supplied by one of the neighbourhood restaurants.
6–9pm. HIM Office, 1033 Davie St. checkhimout.ca

Pussy Play: Live Demo
My editor is sitting reading this right now, shaking her head and thinking, “Where does he find these things?” I’ll never tell. As most, but not all, lesbians and straight men know there are a dozen ways to please a woman with your hands, and if she’s kinky, you’re in for an overnighter. Presented by Redrobin (not the restaurant) check out the live demo where you will explore the many ways to please the female anatomy including petting, slapping, fingering, fisting and more.
7:30pm. The Art of Loving, 369 W Broadway St. Tickets $50 at artofloving.ca
XY Karaoke
Back in my younger years, I attempted karaoke a few times and always thought I nailed it. Once I heard a playback and thought, “What is this crap?” It was me — totally hammered — thinking I sounded like the next Kurt Cobain. I realized then that tequila was not my friend. Of course, there are others just like me and I have learned to laugh — at them. It’s all in good fun and sometimes you even hear someone who will knock your socks off. Come on down, pick up the mic at one of the classiest lounges in the village, and see what all the hype is about.
9pm–2am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. No cover. facebook.com/groups/1250584251625875/

The Barron Gurl Show
Named after whom else — Carlotta Gurl and Isolde N Barron — who by the way seem to get better and sexier with age. It’s a classy night of tunes, banter and sassy humour that is so much fun you could bring your dad to it. If dad does come along, keep him away from the DJ booth as Del Stamp can not only toss a toonie with his butt, he can pick up your dad with it as well.
10pm. The Junction, 1138 Davie St. gayvan.com/whats-on2/lgbt-special-events
