Mpowerment & Chill Date

Mpowerment presents another movie night for young gay, bi and queer guys to come together, watch and discuss queer-themed films. Tonight’s theme is “Places and Cultures,” and will feature Gaycation and a documentary by Vice called Indonesia’s Transsexual Muslims. Snacks will be provided, so come watch, discuss and chill.

6:30pm. Mpowerment Headquarters, 568 Seymour St. No charge. facebook.com/events/1698944797042745

5@50

This could be my story, not just at 50, but every Saturday night. Friends decide an intervention is in order, much to the irritation of Olivia and her partner Nora. Ruby Slippers Theatre and Zee Zee Theatre present the North American premiere of Brad Fraser’s darkly comedic portrayal of women in mid-life. Read our story here.

8pm. PAL Theatre, 581 Cardero St. Tickets $28 general, $25 seniors and students at theatrewire.com. Show runs until Saturday, May 28. facebook.com/events/1082825195111364/

IDAHOT 12th Annual Breakfast

Not sure how many of my friends are morning people, so I may be sitting alone here. Come join me and hear a morning of inspiring stories with a room full of people committed to empowering and celebrating LGBT people, at Qmunity’s annual breakfast to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. News anchor Kevin Newman and his son Alex will share their story of struggle, connection and forgiveness after Alex came out at a Qmunity youth drop-in.

7–9:30am. The Fairmont Hotel, 900 West Georgia St. Tickets $105 at eventbrite.ca. More info at facebook.com/events/1540648636235275

The Lady Show

I don’t know why, but female comics always seem to break me up far more than their male counterparts. I think deep down, whenever I hear female comics, it reminds me of my 5’4” mother waving her finger at my 6’8” self and admonishing me for something I did or didn’t do. The picture of that still makes me chuckle. Tonight you will do more than chuckle as Diana Bang, Morgan Brayton, Emma Cooper and others do sketch, stand-up, monologues and even a bit of dancing to entertain you.

8pm and 10:30pm. Little Mountain Gallery, 195 East 26th Ave. Tickets for either show $10 at eventbrite.ca or $15 at door. facebook.com/events/1710753132473792/

VML Gear Night

Summer is almost here and it’s time to get out your leather gear and give it a good cleaning. I’m as much into smells as the next gay, but after a few weeks of summer heat and sweat you can smell my leather pants from Burnaby. Tonight Vancouver Men In Leather hold their monthly social, so pull out your gear and catch up with new and old brothers in leather and fetish. Stick around for some naked shower fun after the social with Wet & Wild.

8–11pm. Pumpjack Pub, 1167 Davie St. $5 cover after 9pm. vancouvermeninleather.ca/event/vml-gear-night-social-2016-05-13/

Wild Fruit LGBTQ Dance Party

I really want to dress up in drag to go to one of these, but I think I’d be too unattractive to get hit on. But I walked by the last event and the place was rocking. By the sounds of hoots and whistles it sounded like there was a lot of naughty fun going on at the private rooftop patio as well. With DJ Ricki Rocket and DJ Tanner and music by Madonna, Daft Punk and Spice Girls all in one spot.

10pm–3am. Playhouse Nightclub, 1240 Thurlow St. Tickets $10 at Little Sister’s, 1238 Davie St or flygirlproductions.com

Bye Felicia

You can always tell who’s straight at work when they stare at you blankly, wondering why you’re calling them Felicia. If you don’t know this expression either (get off the trails and get out more!), I’ll fill you in: it’s the perfect dismissal, a final goodbye to any unwanted, irritating or disliked person, place or thing. So come out and join all the other “sweeties and darlings and say Bye Felicia to all the little bitch trolls from hell and all the negativity in your life and dance the night away.”

10pm–2am. XYYVR, 1216 Bute St. Cover $5 at door. facebook.com/events/516806035193389/

People Like Us

They really must mean people like you, because there is only one of me and nobody can clone this. But check out Opera Mariposa as they bring you their fourth annual charity benefit production of People Like Us, set on a single night in a New York City bar. Featuring Mark Kroeker, Andrew Wade and others in an original tale about life and love in a modern age. This musical theatre revue features a cast of Lower Mainland performers and hit songs from musicals like Rent and Company.

7:30pm. Marpole United Church, 1296 West 67th Ave. Tickets $25 general, $20 students, seniors and people on a disability benefit, available at operamariposa.com or at the door.

Blowpony

No, this is not some Tijuana sex show travelling to Vancouver; I walked into a show like that in Mexico once where a donkey was on stage. This is a dance party with some flair. Dai Burger from NYC is here with her endless sassy girl raps, raunchy style, twerk-a-licious dancers and a stage performance like no other. With DJs G-Luve, Jay Douglas, Quest, Airick X and hostess Alma B Itches, this night will never end until Alma’s makeup has left a face print on every pillow.

9pm. The Waldorf Hotel, 1489 East Hastings St. Cover $10. facebook.com/events/684852974987445/

Sans Siesta Nights After Lounge

Just what I need: a place to go after all the bars close on Saturday nights that’s a few blocks from home, with lots of hidden spots to play in anonymously, or out in the open if that’s your thing. Since it’s after hours, this is not a licensed event.

1:30–4am. Club 8X6, 1775 Haro St. Cover $15. 8×6.ca

Sunday, May 15

Queen, Eggs and Ham

Dr Seuss must be turning over in his grave. Green Eggs and Ham has been taken over by drag queens and not just any run of the mill queens, but Peach Cobblah and Isolde N Barron. Do I have to remind you this is at 11am on a Sunday? Damn right the mimosas are going to be bottomless. Join the queens and Clayton Alexander as they serve some Sunday realness along with the best brunch in the Village and yes, bottomless mimosas. That will be the first time in history the word bottomless has been associated with Davie Street.

11am–3pm. The Village Bistro, 1143 Davie St. Regular menu prices. facebook.com/events/1709498592638579/

Daily Xtra Pub Night For Gayblevision

Have you ever seen Xtra’s Robin Perelle tipsy? She is so tiny I’m sure it just takes one, but come on down and let’s find out. Join Daily Xtra in support of VIVO Media Arts Centre’s project to create a digital archive of Gayblevision, Canada’s first TV show for gay people by gay people. See the people, organizations, businesses and events that defined Davie Village in the early 1980s. Gayblevision was a window into the LGBT communities during some of our key growing years, from 1980-86.

6pm. The Fountainhead, 1025 Davie St. Free event but please register and print ticket from eventbrite.ca. More info at facebook.com/events/562204153958868/

Prince vs Bowie

I would say this will be a battle to the death but maybe that’s too soon? Though with some of the voices I have heard singing before, death might be welcome. Mine is one of those voices, so a lot of alcohol is going to be needed for me to join in. Sing along with Bowie and Prince videos and if you don’t know the words, fear not, subtitles have been added so you can join in.

7-10pm. The Junction Pub, 1138 Davie St. Entrance by donation to help launch Christopher Logan’s Burlesque book in Las Vegas. vancouver.gaycities.com/events/633912-prince-vs-bowie-a-sing-with-the-videos-event

Lordy Lordy Look Who’s 40

Thank you but before you start sending good wishes my way, it isn’t me. That ship sailed long ago, two decades in fact, and like the Titanic went down hard. Tonight celebrate Green Thumb Theatre and Touchstone Theatre as they both turn 40. Both companies have staged numerous gay productions such as Late Company, True Love Lies and many more. Their shared alumni are a veritable who’s who of local actors, designers, technicians and playwrights. It will be an evening of reminiscing over food, drink, dancing and maybe even a few surprises.

7–10pm. The Post at 750, 110-750 Hamilton St. Admission $5. facebook.com/events/848912911898101/

Gays In The Media Discussion Night

Get together with other young guys and discuss how gay, bi and queer guys are portrayed in the media and online. Do you think stereotypes are changing? Who is actually being represented? What would you change? Mpowerment events are planned by and for young self-identified men who are gay, bi or queer.

6:30pm. Mpowerment Headquarters, 568 Seymour St. No charge. facebook.com/events/988211717941672

: Man about town scurrying into every bar, restaurant, nook and cranny looking for all the details to post the events you want to see. Drop me a line if you want your GLBT themed event, meeting, social, gathering, play party, circle jerk, listed online or even if you are one short for your orgy. I always aim to please.....unless its your eye...ouch!!!
