Choice events in the city this week

DOXA

There’s a reason I watch all my movies at home alone. When I enter a Cineplex I turn into an indecisive, blubbering idiot that holds up the line trying to decide between Ryan Reynolds, Tom Cruise, Thor or the latest screening of any Broadway musical remake. Now along comes the 14th annual DOXA Documentary Film Festival, which features 10 days (starting tonight and running until Sunday, May 10) of films about everything from “politics to pranksters,” and even a section rated Y for youth. The films are too numerous to list, so please go to doxafestival.ca for the complete program guide of shows, venues and times, including this year’s LGBT offerings. Tickets $11–13 available online and at select venues.

Friday, May 1

Cubshack

I’ve been told that Adam Dreaddy and Ryan Steele are sex club virgins. I know, I find that a lot to swallow too. But 8×6 has managed to get them in under the guise of “working” at Vancouver’s long missing dance party. Dreaddy and Karsten Sollors are doing a four-hour back-to-back set while Ryan Steele poses, I mean pours, for all the thirsty cubs. Special performances by Beardonce, Nicki Ravange and Evita Versace will have this men-only night bouncing more than go-go boy Lyle Chan’s delectable balls. 10pm–3am. Club 8×6, 1775 Haro St. Cover $10. facebook.com/club8x6

Mr Spiked 2015

Some balls are dribbled, some balls are juggled, but the best balls are Spiked, and Vancouver’s gay volleyballers spike some of the best. Tonight they’ll crown Mr Spiked, picked from the crème de la crème of the Vancouver Gay Volleyball Association (VGVA) as they vie for the title. Lots of fun, lots of skin, and some of the hottest athletes in town. Pick your favourite contestant and come cheer them on to victory. 8–10pm. Celebrities, 1022 Davie St. Tickets $10 advance at Little Sister’s, 1238 Davie St, or $15 at door. facebook.com/vangayvball

Take charge of the stage and compete against drag kings and queens in the ultimate talent orgy. Tonight is round one; round two will take place on Sunday, May 10; with the finale on Sunday, May 17. 9pm–1am. The Cobalt, 917 Main St. Cover $7. More info here on Facebook. Caliente Nights: Cinco De Mayo

Being gay, we always have to celebrate a party a few days early so this should really be Tres De Mayo, but the tequila will go down just as smoothly. Latin beats with DJ Limon, drag show with Babette Co-Taylor, Casha Only, Miss Funtasy, Mili and more. 10pm. Junction Pub, 1138 Davie St. Cover free before 10pm, $5 after. junctionpub.com
