For many NFL supporters, domestic abuse, possession of illegal weapons, vandalism, drug charges, dog fighting and DUIs a-plenty don’t come close to comparing to the danger and shame of two men . . . kissing.

When Michael Sam found out he had been drafted by the St Louis Rams, making him the first openly gay player signed by an NFL team, he excitedly kissed his boyfriend in a public display of love.

Love? your child asks. What’s that?
