Have you ever heard of CrossFit? Oh that’s right, of course you have. Because everyone who does CrossFit will absolutely not shut up about doing CrossFit.
Well, apparently a big part of the whole CrossFit craze is the CrossFit Games, which still sound more fun than the Sochi Olympics. And like Sochi, they don’t much care for the queer community and have banned a trans woman from competing in the women’s division.
According to Queerty, Chloie Jonnson is suing CrossFit for $2.5 million, saying that the company’s refusal to let her participate in the women’s category violates her civil rights.
In response, CrossFit tried to write off the dismissal by claiming it was a matter of biological differences, saying “Our decision has nothing to do with ‘ignorance’ or being bigots — it has to do with a very real understanding of the human genome, of fundamental biology, that you are either intentionally ignoring or missed in high school.”
Oh reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally? We’re going down this route? Okay then. Listen, if you really understood fundamental biology, you wouldn’t encourage participants to perform as many reps as they can within tight time limits, at the cost of their form. Also, maybe a lot of your newbies wouldn’t end up with rhabdomyolysis.
Look, ultimately CrossFit is just a fad workout. One that apparently works like gangbusters, but it’s just a fad workout. I absolutely do not agree that they should ban athletes with differing biologies, especially since most athletes are the results of genetic advantages. (What, you think a 90 MPH fastball is just something you can achieve with training? NOPE.) The point is, there’s really no reason to ban trans women from competing in a CrossFit competition.
