Fierté Montréal honours David Testo

Soccer player came out last year while playing for Montreal Impact

Fierté Montréal — Montreal Pride — is honouring soccer player David Testo. He will serve as the event’s English-language human rights spokesperson and the parade grand marshal.

Testo went public with his sexuality while playing for the Montreal Impact, making him one of the few professional athletes to do so.

The news was reported on major news outlets across North America last year.

The 30-year-old mid-fielder came out following the suicide of gay Ottawa teen Jamie Hubley. Testo told Xtra he hopes his coming out will provide a role model for teens both in and out of sport.

Below is Xtra‘s interview with Testo. He talks about his coming out, homophobia on the field and awkwardness in the shower room.

On occasion, the number of editors and other staff who contribute to a story gets a little unwieldy to give a byline to everyone. That’s when we use “Xtra Staff” in place of the usual contributor info. If you would like more information on who contributed to a particular story, please contact us here.
