Local filmmaker up for Genie

Queer Vancouver filmmaker Richard Bell and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra conductor Bramwell Tovey have been nominated for a Genie Award for best original song for In a Heartbeat, from the soundtrack of Bell’s 2004 film, Eighteen.

Bell says he couldn’t stop screaming when he found out about the nomination.

“I always used to disbelieve people at awards shows when they said: ‘It feels good just to be nominated,'” Bell says. “I thought they were just being polite and would only be happy if they won. But you know, it does feel good just to be nominated.”

The VSO performed the soundtrack for the film.

Bell trained as an actor and playwright at Langara College’s Studio 58.
