Speed Date with Montreal-based queer, alt-pop artist Maryze

The bilingual musician talks up her latest album “8”

Montreal-based alt-pop artist and TikTok star Maryze sits down with Xtra to chat about her new album, dream collaborations, her viral TikTok videos and more. Maryze’s debut album 8 came out last year and features collaborations with Canadian producers and artists, including 2020 Polaris Music Prize-winner Backxwash. The non-binary singer-songwriter also weaves together themes of identity and sexuality throughout the album. “I feel a lot more in tune with my own gender identity and sexuality now more than ever before with any other music that I’ve released,” Maryze says.

Lito Howse (they/them) is a queer and trans/non-binary identified videographer, editor and producer based in Toronto. They previously worked for the CBC where they wrote TV stories, edited and control room produced for News Network. They also produced videos for CBC Radio and wrote web articles for shows like The Current and As It Happens, among other roles. They speak English.
