Pride flags in West Hollywood and Fire Island were lowered this weekend in remembrance of Charlie Kirk, the conservative commentator who was shot and killed at Utah Valley University.
U.S. president Donald Trump ordered that all flags on public grounds should be lowered to half-mast as a “mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk.” Of those who followed the order were officials in WeHo and Fire Island—which are home to prominent LGBTQ2S+ neighbourhoods.
Some West Hollywood residents criticized how the trans flag and progress Pride flag were lowered to honour someone who has advocated against LGBTQ2S+ rights, alongside other marginalized groups. Officials in Fire Island similarly found themselves in hot water after lowering a trans flag and a Pride flag at Cherry Grove dock under the same directive.
This all comes as Trump’s government and its allies crack down on those critical of Kirk and his legacy. The state department warned that it will vet the online activity of visa holders and seekers for any posts criticizing Kirk.
