My Montreal: Matthew Hays

Seriously elegant dining at the Ritz-Carlton

From favourite events to hidden gems off the beaten path, My Montreal gets the inside scoop from local residents about what not to miss when visiting the city. In this installment we asked gay journalist Matthew Hays to name a favourite city haunt.

“I suggest a meal at the Ritz-Carlton Montréal (1228 Sherbrooke St W). The restaurant just had a complete refurbishing for the hotel’s 100th birthday in 2012, and it’s seriously elegant. The menu constantly changes and features beautiful but never overdone dishes, served perfectly. The dinner menu is fantastic, but wine will drive up the price of your bill, so if you’re on a budget, pop in for lunch. In the summer there’s a garden out back, and you’ll be dining on hallowed ground: this is where Liz Taylor and Richard Burton first tied the knot in 1964.” — Matthew Hays, journalist and author
