More than 1,000 Taiwanese people celebrated a mock wedding Sept 7 to build support for a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, the South China Morning Post reports. The bill is expected to be introduced in the Taiwanese parliament in September. A poll last month showed that more than half of Taiwanese people now back gay marriage, a doubling of support since 2001.
The wedding banquet, featuring traditional red wedding tablecloths and decorations, was organized by the Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights.
“We organized the event in the form of a wedding banquet in the hope that everyone, regardless of his or her sexual orientation, can have equal rights to get married and have families,” spokesperson Severia Lu said.
The same-sex marriage bill is the main hope for Taiwanese gay people who wish to marry. A lawsuit by a gay couple was dropped in January after the appellants received death threats.
