A second official has defied Pennsylvania’s gay-marriage ban, presiding over the Aug 5 wedding of a gay couple despite the law that forbids it.
Braddock Mayor John Fetterman officiated at the marriage of John Kandray and Bill Gray, a couple who have been together for 11 years, CBS Pittsburgh reports.
The couple say they know that a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage means that Pennsylvania will likely not recognize their union.
On July 24, D Bruce Hanes, Montgomery County’s register of wills, declared he would ignore Pennsylvania’s gay-marriage ban and issue licences to gay couples. The state has since sued to stop him, but he has already issued more than 60.
In addition to a licence, however, couples like Kandray and Gray needed an official to break state law and perform the marriage. That’s where Mayor Fetterman stepped in.
“I just think it’s time people in Pennsylvania say, [Governor] Corbett, you know, tear down this law,” Fetterman said.
