Local queer community group Kind is asking for help after a cash deposit box went missing over the holidays.
In a statement on its website, Kind says the deposit box had over $700 in it when it went missing from the Cooper Street facility, and promises that there will be no questions asked if the box is returned.
The theft reportedly occurred over an “unknown time” during the holidays.
“Kind is Canada’s oldest registered charity run by and for the LGBTTQIA community, but that history does not come with an overabundance of funds,” the statement reads.
“If concerned members of the public don’t have information leading to the return of these funds, we urge them to otherwise become monthly donors, so that Kind may confidently continue to serve and support Ottawa’s LGBTTQIA population.”
“There have been several people that have shared what happened, sent encouraging notes or phone calls, and many that have donated. It is all very much appreciated,” says Carling Miller, executive director of Kind.
According to Kind’s statement, the Ottawa Police Service refused to file a report on the theft because of how open ended the case would be, considering the number of people who had access to the group’s centre.
When reached for comment, an OPS spokesperson said that he couldn’t find any file relating to the theft, and as such, could not comment further.
Formerly known as Pink Triangle Services, Kind provides counselling, education and support programs to Ottawa’s broader queer community.
