Mayor Rob Ford said what about the gay community?

June 13, 2001: “I have no problem giving money out to physically or mentally handicapped children or seniors, but spending $5,000 on this video is disgusting, it is absolutely disgusting to spend this amount of money on this, whatever it was called, video.” Rob Ford questions a grant for a educational video on homosexuality in Toronto’s South Asian community.

June 14, 2005: “I don’t understand. No 1, I don’t understand a transgender, I don’t understand, is it a guy dressed up like a girl or a girl dressed up like a guy? And we’re funding this for, I don’t know, what does it say here? We’re giving them $3,210?” Ford questions the utility of grant programs for transgendered and transsexual people during a council debate.

May 24, 2007: Ford slams city for Pride grant
“I don’t think we should be supporting sexuality. The city shouldn’t be funding sexuality. And that’s exactly what council is doing by voting to award a $105,000 grant to the organization that runs Pride week here.”

“Do we have a straight parade? Do we have a heterosexual parade? Do we fund that? No, so I don’t know why we’re funding other things like that.”

“I just disagree that we should be funding someone’s sexuality and that’s what this comes down to and I think it’s absolutely wrong. And I don’t think we should be spending $100,000 on this. I think it’s absolutely wrong. And that’s why I’m not supporting this.”

August 4, 2010: Ford endorses the views of a fundamentalist Christian pastor who said same-sex marriage could “dismantle” a “healthy democratic civilization.” Appearing alongside Pastor Wendell Brereton, Ford says: “We’re together. We… have the same thoughts.”

Rob Ford endorses, is endorsed by pride-dissing, anti-gay-marriage pastor. Hilarity ensues

December 20, 2010: Ford said the city must refocus on delivering core services and leave things like funding parades to the private sector.

“The city should be delivering firefighting, policing, paramedics – those types of services,” he said. The implication is that city contributions to events like Caribana and Pride Week may be withdrawn.

“There’s no reason why a private sector company can’t fund a parade or a festival.”
