‘IT’S OUR MARRIAGE! OUR MARRIAGE!’

Religious rightwingers have their say

More than 3,000 people rallied on the lawn of Queen’s Park May 23 in protest against the federal government’s Bill C-38, which would legalize same-sex marriage.

It was a very Jesus-oriented affair with placards stating things like, “Ask Jesus to free you from your same-sex attraction,” “God created marriage, let him define it,” “Homosexuality is a sin,” “Sodomites will not inherit the kingdom of God and heaven” and the all-time classic “In the beginning, God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.”

The best argument against same-sex marriage advocates came from speaker Dominic Tse, president of the Jubilee Centre For Christian Social Action: “We have to disagree with them. Not because we’re hateful, but because God says so.”

About 50 counter-protesters stood at the south end of the park waving rainbow flags and heckling the speakers with lines like, “We don’t want a theocracy” and “We’re not going away.”

A handful of Defend Marriage types paced a few feet from the queers, glaring and giving the finger, but marshals and cops quickly sent them packing.
