Facebook offers users more gender options

New custom expressions include ‘gender fluid’ and ‘genderqueer’

Facebook announced new options for users who identify as neither male nor female on Feb 13.

“Today, Facebook is offering new gender options to help people who use our service better express their own identities,” a press release says.

Under basic information in the “about” section of a personal page, users can now select “female,” “male” or “custom” to more accurately express their gender.

“When someone selects a custom gender, the person will be able to select one or multiple suggested terms developed in partnership with Facebook’s Network of Support, a group of leading LGBT advocacy organizations,” Facebook says.

The custom gender options available in the drop-down menu are gender fluid, gender variant, genderqueer, gender questioning, gender nonconforming, agender, bigender, cisgender, cisgender female and cisgender male.

Users can also select their preferred pronouns. Options include female, male and neutral. If a user selects “neutral” their chosen pronoun will be “they.”

The new options are available immediately.
