Oh Facebook, what are we going to do with you? The social networking site has a track record for banning anyone who posts anything that can be even vaguely misconstrued as sexual, and it usually ends with them issuing a mea culpa, or otherwise having to explain away the controversy.
Once again, it seems like Facebook has some ‘splainin’ to do: according to Queerty, Facebook has banned 106 people for sharing a picture depicting two dudes kissing. Not even hardcore, tongue-down-throat frenching. Just a pair of lips touching.
See? That’s PG at best.
Apparently, Facebook has banned users for 30 days for posting the photo, claiming that it “violates community standards.” Although as Queerty points out, this decision was made through a less than sophisticated algorithm based on user complaints, rather than an actual human decision, so it remains to be seen if they will reverse the decision anytime soon.
It is ruefully ironic that a photo, meant to call out the idea that same-sex relations are offensive, was taken down because enough people thought that same-sex relations are offensive. That’s literally the exact concept the photo was fighting against, and Facebook’s algorithm immediately caved in to it. That’s pretty dark if you think about it.
